What's frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is also known as adhesive capsulitis, this is a condition that results when there is pain and stiffness in the joints of the shoulder.

The capsules of the shoulder joints became thickened and inflamed and this brings about a restriction in the free movement of the shoulder.

What exactly causes frozen shoulder has not been known but some factors can contribute to it such as:

  • When the shoulder is kept still over a long period of time, this is commonly seen in victims of accidents or surgery patients.

  • When the tendons and muscle around the shoulder becomes inflamed.

  • Some health conditions like Dupuytren's contracture, heart disease, thyroid disease and diabetes increases the chances of developing frozen shoulder and etc

How would you diagnose a frozen shoulder? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Frozen shoulder diagnosis would be done by a specialist usually a Penn orthopaedic specialist. The specialist will have to examine the shoulder and the arm to ascertain the level of pains and the extent of motion it can attain.

Scan like X-ray, MRI, ultrasound and CT scans can be carried out for further diagnosis. Motion exercises of different types are employed for treatment frozen shoulder.

The symptoms of frozen shoulder develops slowly over a period of time in about four stages.

  • The first stage which is the preliminary stage is usually characterized by pains at night and experiencing pain when moving the shoulder and this lasts about 3 months.

  • The second stage known as the freezing stage brings pain with any movement of the shoulder and the movement become really limited and this lasts between three to nine months.

  • The stage three is the frozen stage. The shoulder is stiffer at this stage and atrophy of muscle experienced and this lasts about nine to fifteen months.

  • The fourth stage is the thawing stage and here the movement of the shoulder begins to improve with reduced pains and this lasts between fifteen to twenty four months or more.

Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practising.

I practiced some of the shoulder exercises and here videos to that effect.

Shoulder cycles

Cross body stretch

Scapula retraction

Share your review after performing these exercises either on healthy individual or patient.

I actually woke up this morning with a slight pain on my shoulder and arm which may have been as a result of how I slept through the night.

Hence I decided to try out these shoulder flexion exercises and when I was done, I felt relieve in the pain.

Therefore I recommended these exercises regularly and I will try to include them in my exercise routine.

I never knew there was something called frozen shoulder until this learning challenge. Thank you for this eye opening class.

I ask @amjadali001, @saintkelvin and @lewaswrite to join the learning challenge.

Observations

Task 1 (2.4/3)
You have share your knowledge about frozen shoulder after reading this week lesson. You know the second name of frozen shoulder but you didn't add the stages and phases of frozen shoulder that you have write in the first question. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.5/3)
In the second question, you have write about the X ray, CT scan and MRI to investigate the frozen shoulder. But you should add at least 1 or 2 special tests to assess the frozen shoulder like speed test, yergason test to final diagnose. The good thing you write about steps of each stage so that you can access easily. You answer this question well but still need a bit more depth. Good.

Task 3 (3.7/4)
You try the shoulder circles, scapula retraction and cross body stretch in a good way. I like that you try all the exercises better. But next time try them in a better light. Remember always apply heating pad before performing these exercises. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a good attempt to answer all the questions. Better try next time. That's good with this lesson you learn something new and these exercises relieve your should pain. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from any shoulder pathology. Thank you.
