Hello friends, after a very long time, I participated in the “Picture of the Day, Week 26” contest organized by @ashkhan through the Steem Fashion & Style Community.

The photograph I am sharing in this contest is a picture that we took during our visit to Kirinda Temple. Kirinda is a little fishing village on the coast with breathtaking views and a lovely beach. It is located approximately 37 kilometers from the town of Hambanthota in the Hambanthota District.

During a trip to Southern Province, my friends and I stopped by this temple. Queen Viharamahadevi had landed this place after her brave action. The historical importance of this temple makes it a popular destination in our country. According to the legend, the story is as follows:

Queen Viharamahadevi was the daughter of King Kelanitissa who ruled the Kelaniya Kingdom in the Western Province at that time. According to legend, King Kelanitissa had punished an innocent Buddhist monk by placing him alive in the boiling oil pot. The gods were angered by this cruel incident, and as a result, the ocean rushed inland, which caused the flooding of the whole land. The king's advisors had advised the king that if the princess was sacrificed to the sea, this flooding could be avoided.

Since King Kelanitissa was the ruling king at the time, he had to safeguard all the lives of the country. He thus accepted the advice of his advisors and asked her daughter to take up this endeavor. To protect her country and fulfill her father's desire, the courageous princess gave her life to the sea.

Then, after placing her daughter on the beautifully decorated boat, King Kelanitissa wrote, "This is King Kelanissa's daughter." Legend says that as soon as Queen Viharamahadevi sacrificed to the sea, the water drained away.

After a few months, the queen landed at Kirinda Beach. According to villagers' information, King Kavantissa, who ruled that kingdom at that time, visited this historical place. After knowing her bravery, King Kavantissa married this queen and named her Viharamahadevi.

To remember our visit to this historical monument, we took this picture when we were there. It was getting dark, so the image was blurry. Regardless, this image has become one of my gallery's most memorable pictures.
