KIDNEY TRANSPLANT FROM ANIMAL (PIG) TO A HUMAN
Hello great campus community members, its of my best regards to you all and also wishing you all a beautiful and happy supply Sunday, I would love to lecture us on the latest transplantation which was carried out on the 21st of October 2021 in New york, United state.
Firstly, I would love to educate us on what transplantation is and the things that could lead a human to seek for a transplantation.
Transplantation in biology as the name implies is the removal of cells, tissues, and organs from one person to another in other to replace or repair damaged tissues and organs of the recipient.
Organ transplantation is simply the removal of an organ from an individual to another individual.
Organ transplantation is mostly done when the recipient has no means of survival, making the transplant be it the kidney, heart, and so on a necessity for the survival of the recipient.
These might be as a result of damaged and non-functioning cells or tissues of the organ leading to the improper functioning or non-functioning of that particular organ which will eventually lead to death if not taken care of, and which is by undergoing transplantation.
Going back to the main talk of the day, which is the first successful transplantation of kidney from a pig to a human.
Firstly transplantation comes with an agreement between the doctors and the volunteer, and this also involves the parents or guardian of the individual, be it the receiver or the giver.
The transplant which occurred on the 21st of October 2021 was a kidney from a pig, pigs are similar animals to humans in terms of organ sizes and features, so they are currently the only animal that can be used for organ transplantation to a human and which has been done successfully.
The kidney which came from the pig was genetically modified in other for the body of the recipient not to find the organ as foreign, thus attacking and killing the organ.
The expertise made a statement on the transplantation to be the most advanced experiment in the field so far. Transplantations have been carried out in past years in non-humans until this day, which was the first to be done from an animal to a human successfully.
Humans would no longer die of organ donation to their fellow humans due to the improved advancement in transplantation technology. This experiment is new but the research has been studied for decades until you tested this recent period.
The transplantation took place at New York University Langone Health medical centre which the doctor made a statement after 2 and half days of monitoring the patient's body response said
“We observed a kidney that basically functioned like a human kidney transplant, that appeared to be compatible in as much as it did all the things that a normal human kidney would do.
He also made a statement saying
"It functioned normally, and did not appear to be undergoing rejection."
The pig's thymus gland which lies along the trachea from the larynx(vocal cord) towards the heart was also transplanted because the doctors think that organ would stop any form of rejections in later years to come by the removal of any stray cell that might attack the tissues of the pig's kidney.
NB: that the thymus is the site of T-lymphocyte which plays a unique role of giving immunity thereby fighting germs, bacteria and viruses in the body.
I hope to keep passing more reliable and educative information to this wonderful community with your supports by being active to gain knowledge.
