Sheep at "De Tafelberg" in Blaricum (Netherlands) by Cees van Swieten

Do you ever feel the same when you see art along the (motor)way, wondering what it’s supposed to represent and whether it’s a waste of materials? Years ago, while touring along the backroads?

Once I saw a roundabout with little sheep. So incredibly cute and far nicer than rusty chunks of metal—and all those flowers and shrubs aren’t necessary for me either. Who made those sheep? That’s a question I never got an answer to, but by now I think this "flock" was also created by Cees Swieten (a visual artist and painter), and it can be found in Ermelo.
The sheep have multiplied and are made from, among other things, glacial erratics—the same type of stones used in the past to build the dolmens (above-ground burial chambers), though those stones were much larger. You can find the sheep in several provinces like Drenthe, Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland in the Netherlands. I find them adorable and hope they’ll remain for many years to come. Simply because they represent something—something that may soon only be a faint memory of what no longer exists.

By the way, there’s a real flock of sheep grazing on a hill near the Velperbroek roundabout (the roundabout towards Velp, Utrecht, Arnhem, Duiven—Germany). This hill—for those interested—is a covered landfill site (rubbish dump!), which isn’t exactly healthy.

Those stone sheep also remind me of my childhood. The Kuub (a stone mascot of a gymnastics club) had had babies, and all the members went home with a little painted stone figure. Who made these? Creative people, in any case—and I see fewer and fewer of them these days...

This art work is very creative and unique. At first, I thought these were real sheep but when I looked closely, I saw they were made from big rocks and metal parts. It’s amazing how the artist, Cees van Swieten used simple things to create animals. The sheep look peaceful, standing in the green field under the open sky. This art made me smile and feel calm. I like how it connects nature with imagination. It also shows that even everyday materials can become beautiful art when someone uses creativity and love.

آرٹسٹ کا تخیل اس کو کہاں لے جائے کچھ نہیں پتہ اکثر اوقات تو سڑک پر ایسا ارٹ بناتے ہیں کہ دیکھنے والے کی عقل دنگ رہ جائے

In this case the beauty can be found in the easy things. A stone lying around and seeing a sheep in it. It needs imagination, just like seeing shapes in clouds. What I like is the fact it blends great into nature itself,

Thank you for stopping by, I hoped you would share some art of yours.

It cannot be ruled out that someone may consider such art primitive but personally I am delighted.

I cannot say with certainty what is more difficult to see Venus de Milo in a piece of marble, or to see a flock of very cute sheep in a few piles of stones.

In theory art should give us a mood, and this creativity is exactly of this kind because looking at this composition, I hear the bleating of sheep and the ringing of the bells of the sheep flock.

I immediately wanted to eat a sandwich with butter on which a slice of sheep cheese is comfortably spreading :)

Yes the blacksmith had to work a little on the faces of these sheep to make it easier for us to understand the artist's idea but it was worth it!

Primitive art has its charm, and like you, I am delighted by seeing these sheep everywhere and I would love to have a flock in my garden. They fit great in nature and are easy to keep, plus I can sit on their backs in the sun.

Did you eat the cheese without me?

I assume Cees is the blacksmith, and I wonder how he attached the heads to the stones and the paws.

Thanks for joining. do you have some art to share?

@ wakeupkitty

As one old Moldavian proverb says: Brother is brother, but brynza for money :)
But I would share sheep's cheese if I were in a place where it is not so difficult to get, but I have not seen it on my table for six years.
It is especially pleasant to sit on these sheep in the evening after a hot day and admire the sunset, sitting on a warm stone :)

I think that it is not a problem to attach metal elements to the stone, for this there are drills and mashers with screws.

What kind of art would I share... but let's not philosophize and turn again to primitivism. which can be observed in many Moldavian courtyards lol

Thank you!

This art by Cees van Swieten is very creative and fun. The artist used big stones to make the bodies of sheep and made metal parts for their heads and legs. It looks simple but smart. These sheep are standing in a green field, which makes the whole scene look real, peaceful and close to nature. I like how the artist used natural things to make animals. It shows that art can be made from anything if we think differently. This work made me smile and feel happy. It’s a beautiful and smart idea.

I agree with you it's smart and it blends well in nature, also natural products are used like the stones which are there anyway.
Is there no art you liked to show

Thank you so much

I learnt artistically to call art such as these found objects and I've seen a lot of them that I really love but on the other hand it pisses me off whenever I see artists as such trying to pull so much credits to themselves as though they created the pieces other than discovering and polishing it.

You commented but didn't share some art you like. Why?
Who says he draws all the attention to himself? With us, it's quite normal to "decorate" rondabouts, which you find at nearly every crossing, with some type of art. Art I wouldn't call art, and which doesn't fit into the landscape, which I do find important with all the other trash we already have. Otherwise, a wind turbine can do the trick.

Can you create art that blends well into nature? Made out of natural products? Do you have enough imagination to see something in items/objects others can't see? It would be great to see that since your art seems to be mainly pictures of people. No dogs, cows, market, trees or anything else that shows life, the nature, the richdom of the country or life?

@ wakeupkitty

Art some times could be all about interest, for me I am very much interested in the human figure, I do animals, landscapes and still life sometimes too.
