It's a good idea. Integrating creators and artists. You can always learn, especially if you try, as a learning process, not as imitation. You must understand the process to progress to the next level.
You mention many materials that some people can't afford, or don't have. Although I suppose you can paint with a pencil or a piece of charcoal or chalk. The idea is what it's worth. Every time I paint something, I learn new things.

I am only working an teaching based on what I have available at my disposal or what I've learnt to use, you can always improvise if need be.

I never used gesso, or a primer in my entire life so I guess it's not needed and also depends on the material you use.

What counts is the end result and above all if you learned something and with something I mean your own style.
