Fertilizers and Pesticides Uses in Agriculture

Fertilizers, pesticides are key to More Food From Agriculture

Fertilizers and pesticides play a very important role to get more produce from agriculture. The main idea of fertilizers is to add the micro-nutrients for plants so that grow and produce are more efficient. While pesticides are used to safeguard plants, pests and diseases that destroy crop yields.

Key Functions of Fertilizers in Agriculture

Fertilisers are broadly classified into two main categories, organic fertilisers and inorganic ones. Organic fertilizers — which come from totally natural sources or organic material like compost, manure and green manure. This type fertilizer for soil strength, soil moisture retention and long term ability of that particular plant One the other hand, inorganic fertilizers (chemical based fertilizers i.e. Urea and NPK ) fertilises crops with nutrients faster but can kill the soil.

There are also various local fertilizers available in a number of countries, especially derivative from natural components For example, in Indonesia there is bokashi fertilizer which is made from fermented organic materials and is known to be effective in increasing soil fertility. In Bangladesh, fertilizers based on agricultural waste are also starting to be widely used as an alternative to chemical fertilizers. Local fertilizers, while effective in the hands of local producers also depend heavily on their composition and method applied as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers none the less.

Pesticides in Agriculture

Pesticides are used to prevent pests and plant diseases; just as fertilizers, pesticides also fall into two main categories: Chemical and Natural.

Chemical pesticides are faster acting and more effective but has the ability for pests developing resistance if used indiscriminately while also polluting the environment.

Several farmers are also opting for natural pesticides which they believe is more environment-friendly option, as compared to the alternatives.

The following traditional pesticides are commonly used as natural chemicals; A garlic and chili Solution — this mixture is beneficial in repelling insects without harming plants.

Garlic + chili - is effective against insects but does not harm the plant.

Neem leaf decoction – Contains natural compounds that can kill pest insects.

Tobacco solution – Effective against caterpillars and small insects that damage plant leaves.

Wood ash – Sprinkled around plants to repel soil pests such as snails and ants.
