Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #49
Hello stemians happy new day
Basic Knowledge of Agriculture: Mechanized vs Manual Farming
Agriculture is one area of life we cannot run away from. Whether we live in the city or in the village, everything we eat and most of what we use still come from the farm. Over the years, farming has taken different shapes. In the beginning, it was all about strength, sweat, and simple tools. But today, technology has stepped in and changed the game. That is why we often hear people talk about mechanized farming and manual farming.
Mechanized farming simply means farming with the help of machines. Instead of depending on only human energy, machines like tractors, harvesters, ploughs, and irrigation systems are used to do the heavy work. This makes farming faster, easier, and more productive. A good example is when a tractor ploughs a large piece of land in just a day something that would take a farmer with a hoe weeks to complete. Mechanization is now common in developed countries, and even though it is not yet widespread in many developing nations, it is gradually becoming the future of farming.
Manual farming, on the other hand, is the traditional way of farming. It depends mainly on human effort and sometimes the help of animals like oxen or donkeys. The tools are usually basic—hoes, cutlasses, sickles, rakes, and so on. This method has been around for centuries and is still very common in rural areas. It is cheap to start and keeps many people employed, but it is stressful and time-consuming.
Both methods have their strengths and weaknesses. Mechanized farming saves a lot of time and energy. It allows farmers to cultivate bigger portions of land and harvest more crops. It is also precise because machines can measure and plant seeds at the right spacing, water them properly, and even harvest without wasting much. With mechanization, farming can move from just feeding a family to feeding a whole community or even an entire nation.
But mechanized farming also has its downsides. Machines are very expensive to buy and maintain. Many small farmers cannot afford them. When machines replace human effort, some farm workers lose their jobs. Another challenge is that heavy machines can damage the soil when not properly managed. On top of that, machines depend on fuel, spare parts, and skilled operators. If any of these are missing, farming can come to a halt.
Manual farming too comes with some good points. It is cheap to start since a farmer only needs simple tools. It creates job opportunities for people who rely on daily labor in the farms. Unlike machines that use fuel and release smoke, manual farming is safe for the environment. It also works well for small pieces of land or rough terrains where machines may not be able to operate.
However, the weaknesses of manual farming are clear. It is slow and takes too much time. The output is usually small because one person cannot do what a machine can do. Also, it is very stressful and many farmers encounter body pains and health issues due to constant hard labor. Manual farming is not attractive to the youth anymore because it looks outdated and difficult. And since it cannot produce on a large scale, farmers who depend on it cannot compete in bigger markets.
So which is better? In my view, mechanized farming is the way forward. The world’s population is growing every day, and the demand for food is getting higher. Manual farming cannot meet that demand. Only mechanized farming can produce enough food to keep up with the growing population. It gives higher productivity, saves time, and makes farming more profitable.
Although I also believe manual farming should not be completely rolled off In rural areas where machines are not available, manual farming is still important. It feeds families and provides income for people with no other jobs. The best thing is to find balance between both.
The major challenge in Nigeria is availability and cost of machines a Government and private bodies can step in by providing machines and equipment at cheaper prices or creating cooperative organizations where farmers share machines. I believe If this is done agriculture will take a new shape
In conclusion, agriculture remains the foundation of human survival. Manual farming connects us to tradition and provides for many people at the grassroots. Mechanized farming, is the key to progress and development because it ensures food security and makes farming more productive. Both are important, but the future clearly belongs to mechanization. But we should make proper investment and manage our resources and machines well so agriculture will help improve our economy and living

Uwoooh dah ......
Madam, if they put me and you in a wedding competition, forget I don win you..... No be mouth.
I just remembered going to the farm with my family for the wedding. To make it interesting, I would invite my friends too. We will march into the farm like soldiers; before you know it, we eat up the grass.....everywhere looks tiny.
Apart from that.... Er always has that connection or fun moments...... Playing, singing, wedding competition, and so on. I am very sure that the use of the machine will allow that.
But when it comes to efficiency and easy work, that's when machines come in. If you read the meaning of the machine, you'll understand that it was meant to make work and labor easier.
So we introduced these mechanical methods for faster production and maintenance, but I won't forget to mention that these mechanical methods also add to the maintenance cost.
So if you asked me......... Both mechanical and manual farming are beneficial.
One is convenient and the other builds interconnection.
Thanks for sharing.
