Year-round Agricultural Products That Meet Demand Throughout the Year

In our country some of the main crop is collected once in year but still they store them so well, that we can have some things any time in a year. Which are :rice, wheat, maize, potatoes and ongs. Also things like turmeric and chili ( some spices) are only harvested once a year but they can be found everywhere

Storage of Agricultural Commodities

To sustain the availability of these products throughout the year through both modern and traditional storage techniques are being used.

Artificial Method (Modern):

Cold Storage: Rest potatoes, onions and a few vegetables are cold stored at controlled temperature & humidity for these veggies.

Cold storages and high silos are with arrivals of paddy/wheat( to reserve from the effect of moisture /insect)

Vacuum Packaging and Sealing: These should be stored in a vacuum-sealed package to minimize oxygen and allow the spices to last longer.

Domestic (Traditional) Methods

Direct Sun Drying: Paddy, maize and spices especially chili, turmeric are first dried in sun before being put inside seals packages.

Storing in Gunny Bags (Farmers of small farmers generally store their crops in gunny bag in a dry and shaded to avoid moisture and insect attack.

Storage in Pits: Potatoes and sweet potatots are a few tubers that are stored in pits lined with straw to ensure freshness.

Storage Costs and Government Support

Storage costs vary widely depending on the method used. Storage in cold storage is expensive, running into several hundred dollars per tonne per year. Traditional methods are cheaper but less effective in the long run,

Subsidies on Food Storage is what the government offers, particularly strategic products (like rice and wheat) The Agriculture sector has several loanable-back programs that farmers are guided through establishing their own storage facilities.

Mass Production leads to Storage Difficulties

In the latter, overproduction may cause price declines severe enough to create storage problems. Cold storage was scarce on occasions when farmers could not rent enough in order to harvest many potatoes, leading some farmers to simply waste portions of their harvest. The need for higher storage support to prevent farmers loss in over-production.
