Farming in the field is a vital agricultural activity and a primary source of food and livelihood for humans. Although it is an ancient profession, modern technology and advanced techniques have brought significant changes to farming practices. The process of farming in the field is generally divided into the following steps:

1. Soil Preparation

The soil must first be prepared to make it suitable for farming. It is loosened using plows, tractors, or other agricultural tools. Fertility is enhanced by adding organic manure, compost, or chemical fertilizers during this stage.

2. Seed Selection and Sowing

Choosing high-quality seeds is crucial for the success of cultivation. Depending on the type of crop, seeds are sown directly in the soil or seedlings are prepared and then transplanted into the field.

3. Irrigation

Water supply is essential for proper growth. In dry areas, regular irrigation is required. This can be done through channels, irrigation pumps, or modern drip irrigation methods.

4. Weeding and Cleaning

Weeds must be cleared regularly, as they absorb nutrients from the soil and hinder the growth of crops. This can be done manually or using weed-killing chemicals.

5. Pest Control

Pest control is essential to protect crops. It can be done naturally or by using chemical pesticides. Environment-friendly methods reduce harm to both the land and the ecosystem.

6. Harvesting

Once the crops are ripe, they are harvested. Grains like rice and wheat are either harvested manually or using machines. Proper storage is then ensured to prevent decay or damage.

A cornerstone of the economy.

Plays a role in reducing unemployment.

Helps maintain environmental balance.

By adopting the right farming methods, soil fertility can be preserved, crop yield can be increased, and the living standards of farmers can be improved.

A few words about corn cultivation.

Maize Cultivation is an important agricultural practice in Bangladesh. Maize is a versatile crop used as food grain, animal feed, and raw material in industries. It is highly profitable, and its demand is increasing day by day.

Steps of Maize Cultivation

1. Suitable Soil and Climate

Loamy and well-drained soil is ideal for maize cultivation.

The soil pH should range between 5.5 and 7.5.

Warm and sunny weather is essential for maize growth.

2. Seed Selection

High-quality and disease-free seeds must be used.

High-yielding varieties like Super Shine, Pioneer, and other hybrid types are recommended.

3. Land Preparation

The land should be thoroughly plowed and cleared of weeds.

Organic manure and necessary chemical fertilizers should be applied to enhance soil fertility.

Ensure the field is leveled with proper drainage facilities.

4. Sowing Time and Method

Maize is generally sown between November and February.

Row planting is the best method.

Maintain a spacing of 25-30 cm between plants and 60-70 cm between rows.

5. Fertilizer Application

During sowing, apply fertilizers like urea, TSP, and MOP to the soil.

Additional urea should be applied in three stages based on plant growth.

6. Irrigation

Maize cultivation requires 3-4 irrigations.

Irrigation is crucial during germination, flowering, and cob formation stages.

7. Weed Control

Regular weeding is necessary.

Manual methods or herbicides can be used to control weeds.

8. Pest and Disease Management

Common diseases include blight, stem borer, and leaf burn.

Proper pesticides and preventive measures should be adopted.

9. Harvesting

When the maize grains mature, the leaves and cobs dry out.

Harvesting is done 90-100 days after sowing.

The grains are separated and stored properly after drying.
