THE AMANCHOR CAVE TOURISM SITE IN EBONYI STATE,NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION

In every part of the world, there are some particular designation or location that has a point that attracts people. These points are not man-made rather, they appear the way they and where they are naturally. These People visits these places to see these natural formations that appear the way they are naturally.

Visitors or tourists are go on visits to have fun so the sites or locarion where these natural formations occur, serves as tourists sites that generates revenue. This why the tourism sites are preserved and maintained in order to attract visitors to the place.

This cave is found in ebonyi state of Nigeria precisely in Etiti community, which is in Afikpo south Local Government Area of the state. A source from the community identified to be the community head, disclosed to us that the the cave was discovered by a hunter called “Ofia Ugo,” who later called it “Ogba Amanchor."

From the first picture above, the cave has three tunnels, as two windows and one door. The door serves as the enterance to the cave while the windows makes the floor and inside part of the cave visible and leads towards the ground level of the cave.

The length of the cave is 4 km and measures 2.5 in miles. In the community, there are four market days as enshrined their cultural calendar namely as:

  • Eke
  • Afor
  • Nkwo
  • Orie

On the last market day being the Orie market day on every december, there is a yearly event called the “orie-ogba," that the community taditionally performs right inside the cave.

When opinion were sited, they hold that the cave fulfils the purpose of been a ground where to obtain luck or charms. It is also there as a place where people could go for spiritual cleasing. The visitors informs the village head and he leads them before they they make their make their paryers at a one spot in the cave.

This cave serves as a tourist site to residents and non-residents of the state. Sometimes, people from the global community visits this cave.

Just as different kinds people visits the cave for different reasons, it hosts different kinds of animals especially the bats which is often seen around the cave. There are also other animals carries fruits they eat to the cave. They live there early in the morning and comes to the cave late in the night.

During the Nigeria civil that happened between 1967 to 1970, the cave served as a hiding shelter for the indigens of the community.

COST OF VISITING THE CAVE
There is no cost attached to visit the place. But before you come, you must have a connection with a well known member of the community who would then take you to the village head and do some introduction. They may ask you to get or buy few items like goat, fowl, hot drinks, and kola nuts.

FOR LODGING:
Just like as I said, you would have some connections with a well known community member. While in the community, your host may provide an accomodation for you during your visit. But then, you can still show your host some appreciations.

THE FOOD:
You would enjoy some local dishes prepared by the people. You also have the opportunity to learn how to prepare the local dishes.

Finally, during the festive season, a lot of people come around to visit the cave as a tourism site and enjoy the cool atmosphere.
