Orchids are herbaceous plants, rarely annual, terrestrial or epiphytic perennials, occasionally climbing. A few species lack chlorophyll, and are mycoheterotrophic. With regard to epiphytic orchids, it is said that they can become eternal. In fact, in nature, their survival is tied to the life of the tree that supports them.

Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants, with about 20,000 species divided into about 800 genera throughout the world.

The fragrance in orchids is most noticeable when the weather is humid, warm and windy.
