China shows off its DF-5 nuclear bomb for the first time in history

It was as if the veil of the thickest curtain of China's military power had been removed and there it was, an intercontinental missile capable of destroying entire cities with a single shot, it was not an accident it was a message, for the first time in history the Chinese state broadcaster revealed technical details of the DF-5 nuclear warhead, a 4 megaton weapon with a range of 12,000 km.

Developed in the 1970s and formally implemented in 1981, the DF was always a known part of the Chinese nuclear arsenal, but its deepest secrets remained buried in silos until now. The 4-megaton warhead has a power equivalent to 200 times the Hiroshima bomb and the range to reach not only the United States, but also all of Western Europe, all with an accuracy of up to 500 meters, more than enough to fulfill its function as a centerpiece in the China's nuclear deterrent.

This revelation was not only technical, it was strategic by voluntarily revealing the power of the DF-5. China sends a clear message to the West, we have more than you imagine and choose to show, the timing is also symbolic. In 2023, Beijing conducted its first ICBM clinical test in decades, firing a dummy warhead over the Pacific.

The country has also already built more than 320 active silos with plans to exceed 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030. This transforms what was a contained deterrent force into a true arsenal of global influence, with its 32 meters high and 183 tons. China is not only modernizing, it is demonstrating that it knows how to play the same game as the United States and, moreover, it is exposing that power with the DF31 and the terrifying DF41, both mobile and also with multiple warheads. Despite this demonstration of power, China reaffirms its policy of no nuclear first use, in other words, it would not fire first unless it was attacked, but this calculated opening poses a serious concern: we are facing a new era of military transparency or just a geopolitical staging made to show strength without showing everything.

The revelation of the DF-5 warhead makes the world look again at the Chinese nuclear arsenal with eyes wide open with fear and curiosity, China is redefining the concept of deterrence and showing that even in the shadows it is capable of projecting its power, now tell me to what extent transparency in times of digital Cold War is real and what do we still not know.
