Hi steemians,
I'm delighted to present my entry for this week's engagement challenge. It is the last week of the challenge for season 7 and today we are presented with a very important topic that every steemian should be aware of. Security is a key factor that the platform holds in very high esteem. Hence today, we will be discussing the security of our accounts.

Hacking is the process of having access to a place where ordinarily you are not permitted to go in. Our steemit account is our data and no second party should have an access to it. We can't completely trust people because even brothers have killed each other for power and assets. Without further ado, let's go straight into the topic properly by answering the questions below.

Have you had your Steemit account hacked? What do you think about dubious links offering rewards? Give us your opinion.

Hacking of steemit accounts is things we may not think will be possible due to the security features that the platform has but even at that we have seen different accounts being hacked recently. As the security feature keeps increasing, hackers get smarter and also sort for other ways to break into our accounts and steal our funds.

Talking about having my steemit account hacked, I have not had such an experience before because I'm always on the watch and I read many articles on how these scammers come up with new strategies as to how they intend to break into our accounts and steal our funds. Whenever I read through different posts by reputable members of the platform, I get informed and then I always avoid anything that will lead to my account being hacked.

What do you think about dubious links offering rewards? Give us your opinion
The steemit platform as we all know is free and anyone can create an account. Based on this factor, hackers take advantage of it and drop some dubious links in the comment section of a trending post or in any of our posts requesting us to click a link and earn some reward.

A lot of people have fallen for these thieves because of greed. We are all aware of the effort required by every steemian here on this platform to write before he or she will get a reward and recently we are even told that the votes are not guaranteed which means the reward is not certain even when you put in much hard work.

Dubious links offering rewards

With that being said, every steemians should always be aware that nobody will just gift you 500 or more steem without needing something in return. Only genuine users who are donating to charity can do that and there will be no conditions to click a link before the offer comes.

Based on this fact, my opinion about dubious links offering rewards is that all steemit users must be very careful because no free reward on the platform. You have to work for whatever you will be earning. So, please to both new and old steemians, don't be greedy, the journey here on the steemit platform is a step-by-step process.

Don't think you are too special and that is why you are seeing such an offer. They have given the same to others too but since they know their plans, they ignore them hence your case shouldn't be exceptional. So don't click on dubious links seeking any form of reward.

What are your recommendations to prevent your account from being stolen or hacked? Give us your opinion.

mine.PNG

As a steemian, there are lots of things you can do to help avoid your account from being stolen or hacked. A few of the things to take into consideration are listed below.

  • Don't click on suspicious links: Any link you don't feel comfortable with for any reason, please don't click on it. Ensure that any link you will be clicking is from a trustworthy person on the platform.

  • Store keys offline: Please do not for any reason store your keys online because hackers always work with anything that is connected online. So it is recommended you have your keys stored on a piece of paper, an external drive etc.

  • Check your account at all times: Another major way to avoid your account being stolen is by checking on your account regularly. If you check your account regularly, and there is any form of power down initiated and you are not the person that initiated them you will know that your account has been compromised. All you need is to hurriedly change your keys.

  • Change your password at least every six (6) months: This may sound strange but it is the best way to keep your account very secure. This will also make it difficult for hackers to get to your account since you do an update of your keys as well.

  • Change your recovery account immediately if you notice any suspicious: The main way to get our account back if hacked is through the recovery account hence if you notice any malicious behaviour, hurriedly change the recovery account and the password immediately and then you will be safe once again.

  • Always keep your device updated: Here, the browsers and every other thing you use to access the account must be kept up to date. In doing so, your asset will be more secure because hacking through your device alone may be very time-consuming and going through your account will in turn be very difficult.

Why do some accounts get hacked? What would you say to people whose accounts are hacked?

mine.PNG

There are many reasons why some accounts get hacked and I will be stating a few of them below.

  • Clicking on Phishing links: One of the major ways in which our accounts get hacked is when we click on phishing links. Here, after a user click on such a link, the hacker takes time to deceive the person and then gets their master key and possibly changes it.

  • Malware attacks: When our device is affected by some sort of malware, we may not be able to have complete control of our device any longer. Most of this malware is created purposely to steal the assets of users. So as your system is malfunctioning, they will get into it and steal your funds.

  • Not keeping our passwords safer: Good passwords shouldn't be something that can be easily memorised and that is why our steemit account password is created in the form it is today. Once these passwords are not properly kept, even our friends can steal our keys and our assets if we are not careful.

What would you say to people whose accounts are hacked?

There is nothing much to tell those whose account has been hacked. If you notice that your account has been hacked, I suggest you do any or all of the following immediately so that you don't get to lose your assets.

  • If your recovery account has not been changed, please change the account immediately and then generate a new key and then stop every process like powering down and wait for the next action of the hacker.

  • Communicate with the steemit team through either the SC01/SC02 or contact any of the witnesses so that a quick action to rescue your account will be initiated.

  • Always check for updates about the different strategies which hackers use to have assessed accounts and also practice every security measure as to how you will be able to protect yourself. Security is an individual thing hence everyone is responsible for his/her security.

  • If you notice any unusual thing, hurriedly chart your superiors on the platform so that they can come to your rescue because the earlier the better. So that is all for those whose accounts have been hacked.

If you find out that your account has been hacked, what are the steps you should take immediately to prevent your tokens from being stolen?

mine.PNG

Once I notice that my account has been hacked, the first thing I will do is change my recovery account and then change my password immediately after that. With this move, the person who had access to my account will no longer have access. After that, I will go straight and report the case to my superiors in the platform like my CRs.

Secondly, if for any reason I have some liquid steem in my wallet, I will power it up immediately since it can not be transferred out immediately again. Then I will keep more watch on my account and see if such incidents will repeat themselves.

Lastly, I will update all my devices and have them properly scanned so that I will be sure that it is not because of the malware in the device that caused it to be hacked. If I'm not comfortable with that, I will log out from the device and erase all data concerning my account from the device and see the impact on my account.

With the above-listed steps, anyone can be able to protect his/her account funds from being stolen even when it is hacked. The steemit team advises us to always power up our liquid steem if we don't want to withdraw it. These were for our good and benefit. If you don't do it this way, every asset in your account will be transferred out immediately after they get access to your account.

Conclusion

You will agree with me that security is the concern of everyone on the steemit platform and that is the reason SC01 recommended this very topic for the last week of the steemit crypto academy. This means that they are very concerned about how we keep or take care of our assets. I have listed a few things to do to keep our account safe and secure above and I have also stated what should be done if your account is been hacked.

I do hope you will find the information I have given above useful and work with it. I have also written various tips to stay safe on the steemit platform. You can see that article on my blog. I want to finally invite @ubongudofot, @goodybest, @nahela, @waterjoe and @karianaporras to also join the contest.

Great post @simonnwigwe! Security is a key factor for all steemians, and it's essential to stay informed about the different strategies hackers employ. Your post provides us with invaluable information about what steps to take before and after your account might be hacked.

First of all, it's always important to remember to stick with only trusted sources and avoid clicking links that look suspicious—no matter how tempting they may seem. You've also highlighted the importance of needing to keep up with all updates for our devices and browsers, as well as changing and storing our passwords safely. Lastly, you've provided a great reminder that if our accounts do get hacked we should act quickly and inform those who can assist us—just like the Steemit team itself.

Overall, I think your post today really gives us all a great checklist to refer to when it comes to keeping our accounts safe which is so important. Kudos to you for such an insightful piece!

Thanks for taking out your time to guide and instruct us on how best to take care of our accounts from malicious actors.

Steemit is an increasingly popular platform for cryptocurrency trading, content creation, and more. Unfortunately, as with any upright online platform, there is always the risk of your account being hacked.

Steemit users ought to be aware of the and follow the important tips given on how to prevent hacks on our Steemit account, so we can stay safe and secure while using the platform.

As stated rightly on this article, we should always try to save our keys and passwords offline, as this would make it difficult for hackers to access them.

Another very important point is to avoid clicking on malicious link, as this could be strategies by the hackers to get your login details and steal your funds.

I really love the valuable guide and remarkable points shared on this article my boss.
