It's another week to put a smile on the faces of children. There's this feeling they have anytime they see adults come to play with them. Most parents and adults feel it's childish to play children's play but that perspective is quite different. For this week's task, we are to make Puppets

Together with your child between 4 and 12 years old, make one or more glove puppets using the materials of your choice. Remember to indicate the materials used, as well as the step-by-step process and the final result. Include photographic evidence. Also include both the children and you making the puppet and showing the final result

Making a puppet is more like doing crafts. It's just that you'll need to add some creativity to make it unique. These are the materials I used in making the puppets. Before making it, it actually asked myself what can be used to make this puppets? I usually watch puppets in PBS kids channel and how funny they look like. So since it was specified to use gloves puppets, I decided to go with socks.

CartonFor making the head and holding the socks from falling or being feeble
Red penFor painting the eyes and tongue and for drawing

A pair of SocksAs the puppets

These are the steps used in making the Puppets. I sat with my children friend as he made this puppet with me. He was the photographer at some point and then helped in cutting with the scissors.

Step 1: To make the above puppet, I took out a carton paper and measured the size I wanted. I then placed two parallel lines in the middle which would act as the throat. After doing that, I folded the carton and then told my friend to place his hands on the carton for me to draw the size I want to cut off. I ensured that the hands were placed opposite the parallel lines.

Step 2: I then carved out the drawing made on one side and then made the same drawing on the other side to make a mouth. It looks more like a mouth, doesn't it? After this, I took the carton paper, folded it and made a small pipe which I would use for the head. After folding, I used my glue to glue it together. It was my child friend that helped me do this. His name is reward.

Step 3: After folding it to attain that pipe shape, I made a circular hole at the bottom of the pipe where two or three fingers would fit in if put inside the socks. After doing that, I glued it on top of the mouth part I carved out. I then cut pieces of the cardboard circularly to create cheeks which I glued close mouth area. After doing that, I had this result and then put it into the sock with the ankle part facing back as the sock is a long one.

**Step 4**: After ensuring this was done, I glued the mouth part to the sock so I can place a circular shape from the cardboard as the visible mouth. I glued everything and then gave him the pen to draw the tongue and paint it. He did just so. In addition, he carved the eyes from the cardboard paper and nose and teeth as well. He did the painting and if looked so unique.

Step 5: I helped him with the hair part by using the wool to roll and cut into a small size. My puppet was ready with his hands tucked in. This is the final result I got from doing this puppet with him. We were so happy we could accomplish something as did though it was dark.

How many puppets did they make? What character do you think they would create? What could they do with it?

I did two puppets with the pair of socks I used as materials at the onset, one for my friend and the other for me. The character they would create is the chucks character that's always a shy student with fear in his eyes that's why his eyes are red. He fears to speak in public but is very intelligent. This is the character he created in their mind and with the aid of a video, he could play with it. He used his thumb and fingers to fit into the puppet and gave it life by moving it mouth and head.

Can you imagine the puppet spelt the longest word in English language? He aided the movement if the puppet mouth by using his hands. So his puppet can actually talk and not lifeless he taught. I edited the video to amplify his Voice and removed background noise.

Was it difficult to make the puppet? What was your overall experience like?

It wasn't really difficult to make this puppet though it required a lot of work and techniques. I just had to look for the most creative way to find up with this and with the help of my boyfriend, we did it in no time though night covered us in the process of finishing. My overall experience was creativity and mental transformation. You know when you're creating something, you'll look for ways to make it useful and stand out.

This involves using your head to develop ideas that can work for you. It was happy I wasn't the only one working alone. I had my friend who's still a child to assist me and motivate me if not I would have given up participating this week. I was enlightened and happy we could make a puppet that's amusing, the puppets we usually see on TV shows. I didn't experience stress at all because there were people who motivated me.

Did the child enjoy this activity? What did he or she enjoy most?

The child really enjoyed this activity because it's something they have been seeing in PBS kids channel and they've made it even though they weren't perfect. He has actually made his favourite chucks. He enjoyed the part that the mouth can move. He was after moving the mouth more often and he also was amazed by the creativity in putting your fingers constructively to make the mouth move.

He also enjoyed my presence as his parents won't have that time to play with him. They are always focused on him studying and reading his books. No one to play with. He learnt a lot from the creativity, mental work in producing ideas that can make the puppet work and materials used as well. I enjoyed doing this as well. It breathe life into me. I felt a measure of responsibility and the video part was the most amusing. I kept watching the movie often.

Thanks to the contest host for choosing to bring up to contest to put smiles on the face of our children and children friends.
