A Display of Lilies II
Lilium is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs, all with large prominent flowers. The flowers are often fragrant, and come in a wide range of colors including whites, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds and purples. They are the true lilies. Many other plants have "lily" in their common names, but do not belong to the same genus and are therefore not true lilies.
There are more than 100 species of lily and numerous cultivated varieties. Lilies are classified into nine divisions, depending on their parentage as well as flower shape, which can be trumpet, bowl, funnel-shaped, to a "Turk's cap". They are amongst the oldest cultivated ornamental plants, popular because of their beautiful, large, and fragrant flowers. The blooms can last up to two weeks. This makes them very suitable, and popular for bouquets.
Most lilies grow from bulbs. They thrive best in partial shades, with loose, well-drained soil. Lilies can be grown indoors and outdoors.
Among various indigenous and traditional practices, the bulbs of certain species have been used to soothe coughs, fevers, and inflammations; to treat wounds and skin ailments; and as expectorants and revitalising tonics.
The following photos are from my recent visit to the Flower Dome where ‘Lilytopia’ – a display of lilies was being held. The display was impressive. In the Dome, where temperatures are maintained at Spring temperatures, it was very pleasant to walk among the beautiful, fragrant lily blooms.
