Good day friends I hope you are all well.

Today I am going to tell you about another environmentally friendly industry in our country that is now extinct.

It is about the eco-friendly coir industry that has been around since time immemorial. Although modern technology has conquered the world day by day, brooms, rugs,Mattress , ropes, etc. are essential in every home.From time immemorial it has been manufactured using coir-based materials. In the past, it was manufactured using environmentally friendly coir. Due to modern technology, these products are manufactured using environmentally adverse plastics, rubber, polythene etc. Therefore, the coir industry is losing ground in Sri Lanka. There were many people who made a living from the coir industry from the past. But today the number of people engaged in the coir industry has greatly decreased. But there is a high demand for these coir based products in European countries for these industry related products that we are losing in our country. The owner of the coir factory says that all these coir based products are bought by Hayleys and exported to European countries.

This coir industry has a high status in the coastal areas of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Every stage in the past was done by workers. So many people had plenty of jobs. Many people have lost their jobs due to the addition of modern technology. The pollen was soaked and then crushed into strands, which were then dried and lost to the women who twisted the household ropes. The broom used at home has become a plastic band. Rubber mats have been produced to replace coir mats. Rubber mattresses have come to replace coir mattresses. Coir based products in our country are extinct. We use coir based products from our past everyday. The environment of our country as well as the lives of our people who make a living from coir based products will be better. The end

This is a very good industry where it comes from the ancient times. As a developing country, the government should give their hand to protect these industries & and also they need to find some more export possibilities also. This is a very informative article and I learned a lot from this one.

Thank You!!!

I had never known so much about the coir industry before. Thank you for finding so much information and sharing it with us. We really need to appreciate industries like this. Local things need to be appreciated. We used to have a coir broom in our house. But now there are plastic ones. Really sad about that.

@nalin10 ,
This is very interesting post and modern society interest to use eco friendly product.
Because of open economy system chinese plastic product destroyed our local coir Industry.
So we have responsibility choose every time local coir product and save the industry.

I have learnt about this industry a bit in micro biology.

all these coir based products are bought by Hayleys and exported to European countries.

On one hand we can be happy since this enhances our export economy and is a help to locals who work in coir industry.

On the other hand it is sad that plastic, rubber and cotton take the place of coir in Sri Lanka.
