{Pedantic} How To Meme

in Original MEMEs5 years ago (edited)
  1. It's pronounced "meme" which rhymes with "steem."
  2. A meme is not just a random picture with a caption. At best, that's merely a joke. Memes and jokes do not necessarily overlap.
  3. The pedigree of the template is important to consider. Meaning, what the meme has been used to express before should be incorporated into your creation, unless you have a good reason to change it.

In the above examples, the original intent of the image is to convey frustration. This is because the original image is titled "Hide the Pain Harold." It has an established meaning.

This is not to say that it cannot be re-contextualized and used another way, but doing so should be done with care.

This is the best meme ever made from this stock photo. :D

Yep. That's the thing, though. "Harold" was a stock photo that has become something much more.

so your the meme police? So we have to use 2008 era meme generator stuff? lol why not just use memetsrgram that steem site where they auto generate the text for ya

can we use hivemind with these steemconnect workable front ends? lol cant i just use hive-101863 as a tag for one of these posts, will that work?

That makes sense. I am not too well versed in MEMEology, yet. I suppose the more I post the better I will get. This post is very helpful. Thank you for your contribution!

To some people, it's almost like a language that evolves over time, like a natural language.

Being a pedant isn't a bad thing to me. I would rather be blinded by light than consumed by darkness.

next step in human evolution, instead of a black monolith it's more like a picture of one with a dank meme

i cant upvote lol can u?

it is working on and off like everything else , this is hilariously bizarre and not in a funny , ha ha way
not really been on to see what is working or not tbh

It's pronounced "meme" which rhymes with "steem."

:P Solid reason to flood this place with memes. We need some fun around here

I have some meme knowledge too🥺

Let's get really pedantic and identify that memes are mental viruses - the digital analogue (see, that's a pun) to genes.

So your random picture that nobody cares about with text is not a meme.

Your picture with hide the pain Harold that is identifiable to millions of people around the world with a clever witticism (that's redundant) is a meme.

Yep, I kind-of allude to that, but I wanted to keep it simple.

A completely original ”meme” is basically an oxymoron, in a sense. Unless it takes off. It's analogous to making up a new word.

exactly, the meme is the viral image, not some text based joke lol, inertia was wrong

the first meme was killroy was here according to some but there's been plenty more

the bible is a meme, jesus is a meme

the letter A and arabic numbers are a meme

the alphabet from the phoenicians are THE meme

This actually may have been the FIRST real meme in modern times simply because it was during a time when people were actually traveling around the world en mass for w2 and there was a lot of commotion, i remember seeing this in a bathroom in the london museum in 2006, so yeah its crazy how the same social stuff online now was visible with newspapers and diffusive paper information blah blah blah blah

Kilroy was here
Kilroy was here is an American symbol that became popular during World War II, typically seen in graffiti. Its origin is debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle became associated with GIs in the 1940s: a bald-headed man (sometimes depicted as having a few hairs) with a prominent nose peeking over a wall with his fingers clutching the wall.
"Kilroy" was the American equivalent of the Australian Foo was here which originated during World War I. "Mr Chad" or just "Chad" was the version that became popular in the United Kingdom. The character of Chad may have been derived from a British cartoonist in 1938, possibly pre-dating "Kilroy was here".

You're right. Think of these as suggestions.

You need to classify what you said as TEXT based memes maybe, or dunno, cuz what ur talklin about, is a specific type of meme, not all memes even have text

many memes are VIDEOS now, thats where a high bandwidth of memetic content actually lives now, its on youtube in "dank meme" compilation videos

But yeah you have some good Text based Meme Guidelines

and i get your trying to explain this to new users who maybe dont get the idea of how memes must have context "Script RUns Deep" etc...

aka.... people enjoy/prefer a long running inside joke

"The meme is the parable of the digital age."

  • appalachain.

Unfortunately, "meme" does not rhyme with "hive" as it does with "steem". The fork will be a sad, sad day for all meme and wordplay lovers.

This meme is way better if you read the whole thing like a comic from top left to bottom right.

That's true. And also, the second "Incorrect Usage" comic by itself is now more funny than the "Correct Usage" one. That just shows how meaning can change over time.
