LITTLE BIGHORN... Sad, Sombering and Breathtaking

in #history7 years ago

I will be the first to admit I did not have the highest expectations of Little Bighorn. I thought my husband was taking me to look out at a vast open field in Montana! Our drive in was less than an hour over the Montana border, just below Crow Agency.

Upon arrival we visited the gift shop and decided to take the guided bus tour out to the route. Our guide was a full blood Crow Indian, his Grandfather was our driver. They knew the site inside and out, even taught us a bit of their native language. First stop was the mass grave erected many years after the battle. It certainly hit the heart to think these were all young boys and men. Most between the ages of 18-25.

Our tour continued and we viewed the grave markers meticulously put up by the US Dept of War, marking each place a fallen soldier was found. Not a dry eye on the bus.

After our return from the almost hour long bus tour, we decided to drive the route in our truck. Can't wait for you to see the pictures of the wild horses we saw! Tune in later this week!
