RE: If someone from ancient Rome suddenly appeared among us, what would be the hardest thing to explain to him?

in #history7 years ago

The ancient romans were cool with technology (they had inherited lots of it from the Greeks like astrolabes etc).

I think the thing that would puzzle them the most is womens rights and women leaders. (The ancient Spartans gave a lot of rights to women who ran the economy while the men trained for war, but the Spartans were considered weird by all the other ancient people's).

Very interesting, didn't think of that! Sending 1 STEEM your way 😊

Unfortunately, that didn't work out so well for them, as there was a very strong correlation between when the men more or less abandoned the government for war and when catastrophic things happened to Sparta. This is perhaps an expected outcome when a theoretically experienced group suddenly delegates critical tasks wholesale to a new group without that same experience.

Sparta liked to conquer more land than they could feasibly keep subjugated.
