Eastern Vallecito Mountains High Point

in #hike7 years ago

The Vallecito Mountains are in eastern San Diego county and spread over a large area. The west part of the range is dominated by Whale Mountain, but the goal today was the eastern high point at 3583'. This part of the range is so remote that the starting point requires an 18 mile one way trip on a jeep trail. It took an hour and a half to make the drive over large rocks and deep sand. 4x4 required.

The hike itself is short but challenging, with two boulder walls to overcome. In between is a flat, sandy plateau sometimes called Tarantula Flat. We found a lot of bones in this area, either bighorn or deer. The actual high point is not visible until you are within 200' of it. The best views from the summit were east toward Borrego Valley and Salton Sea.

Whats the story about the note in your pic?

Would be cool to find dinosaur bones up there :-)

That note is the original cover from the first register placed on the summit. Those were likely the first people to climb this mountain and they placed a notebook inside a coffee can on top for others to sign when they reached the summit. The peak was later added to the official Sierra Club San Diego Peaks List.

After this one, I have climbed 91/100 on the list.

I don't know about dinosaur bones, but we did find some indian pottery shards. There are supposed to be a lot of indian artifacts in the area, but I think it is illegal to remove them.

Ok thats very cool!!!
only 9 more to go for you :-)
