Brugmansia : Impressive appearance
Brugmansia is a striking plant in any garden. Its large, bell-shaped flowers look like old-fashioned record players. The leaves are also large and bright green. It used to be grouped with Datura, but now it has its own genus. Its unique flowers have earned it the nickname "angel's trumpets."
Brugmansia is part of the Solanaceae family. It can grow as a shrub or a small tree. It naturally grows in South America. The shrub has a full crown with flexible, green stems. Its leaves are oblong and oval-shaped. They are usually a dark green color. Some types have leaves with jagged edges or short hairs.
The leaves can grow up to 30 cm long. Some brugmansia plants have different colored leaves. In the summer, tubular flowers appear at the ends of the stems. Often, they grow alone.
The flowers come in different colors. This depends on the type of plant. They can be 25 to 50 cm long and 15 to 25 cm wide. The flowers always point downwards. Plant breeders have created varieties with single or double flowers. Some even have two layers of petals.
The flowers can be white, yellow, orange, red, pink, or purple. The buds have a strong scent. It gets stronger in the evening. The plant flowers from July to December. After flowering, pod-shaped fruits appear. At home, the plant can reach 2 meters tall. In nature, it grows much taller. Brugmansia is often grown in pots. It likes warm weather and cannot handle frost.
