Helpie’s Homesteading Curation Report

Second Edition

helpie-homesteading_01.png

Welcome to the Second Edition of the new Helpie Homesteading Curation Report! This will be a weekly report where we will feature some great content coming out of the homesteading community. Our goal is to find those individuals that are producing quality content, and raise them up to help them grow. We will do this by featuring five Steemians and their posts each week, while paying them for for their amazing content from this post rewards payout. The idea is to find those hidden gems that are not getting the recognition they deserve, and lift them in any way we can.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for great content! We want to reward those individuals that are taking their time and energy to add value to the platform through their high quality content. That’s it, think quality over quantity. We will be collecting them through the week and posting our top five here each Monday.

First Things First: What is Helpie?

Helpie is a new and unique educational community within Steemit, designed to help users that are creating quality content grow on the platform. We do this through a variety of ways including;

  • Lessons designed to help users navigate the steemit network and teach them how to get the most out of it. (ex. GINAbot Tutorial, Growing Your Following On Steemit, and Markdown Challenge
  • Daily Steemit related trivia and contests
  • Mentorship from established Steemit users in all different categories
  • A place to discuss ideas, collaborate with other members, and build your personal community
  • Daily upvote from Helpie for members
  • Weekly Curation of great quality content (We are starting with homesteading, but hope to add other categories in the future).

Helpie is an invite only community, but anyone can participate in the daily trivia questions. You are not required to upvote Helpi’s posts to participate. This initiative is not meant to be a vote for vote operation, it’s an educational tool only. If you would like to be considered to join Helpie as a minnow in training, please consider joining PALnet/MSP and participating in the community. We have scouts constantly looking for the right minnows to support, and they will reach out with a private invitation.

This Week's Featured Steemians

This Could Change Everything-How It All Began By @gardeningchannel

First up this week is James (@gardeningchannel) who joined Steemit in July 2017. He has had a very successful youtube channel since 2012 with over 30k followers. His posts include permiculture videos in which he shows us how he turned his suburban backyard into an amazing food forest. He writes, “I am dedicated to teaching others how to grow their own healthy food without using harmful practices. Gardening is my passion, and growing Food Forests is my specialty. I go beyond organic gardening and work with nature rather than against it.” James’ videos are not only packed full of useful information, but they are fun to watch as well. He has so much knowledge and he graciously wants to share it with all of us. I believe James is definitely someone who will go far on steemit and I hope we can help get his blog the recognition it deserves.

His featured post today is a very inspirational look at where his permaculture journey began and how far he has come. The video is full of inspirational quotes with lines that can resonate with anyone working towards a dream - “I was willing to take a chance, most people won’t do that, these are not risk takers.” And “Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.” I could quote this video all day and still not do it justice. The video takes us over a five year period of James making his dream come true, through his hard word and determination he turned his ordinary backyard into an astonishing Food Forest. To me the message is simple… it won’t happen overnight and it won’t be easy, but if we keeping working towards our dreams, nothing can stop us. I would say that this is a motto that we homesteaders can relate to, but honesty, I think it is way bigger than that. I think this is a message that touches every single one of us.

His other recent posts include Full Year Garden Tour 2017, A walk through his Food Forest through the year, to visually see it come to life and Top 7 Reasons To Prune, a quick guide of why and how we should be pruning our fruit trees before spring. So stop what you are doing and go follow @gardenchannel right now, I promise you will not regret it.

Symbiotic Gardening By @derekfreeman

Our next featured Steemian is @derekfreeman who joined Steemit in February of this year. He has a background in Mathematics and Cosmology, which is apparent in his blog. The way he writes about plants and gardening techniques is absolutely enchanting. He posts about a variety of things including in depth looks into certain plants and their health benefits, his poultry operation, and tips on how Steemit can be beneficial to homesteaders. He writes “Transitioning from the rat race to systemic escape. I’m learning to grow food, raise animals, and become self sufficient…”

His featured post today is an extensive look into Symbiotic Gardening (Companion Planting), which has been used since ancient times. He explains how the symbiotic relationship between certain plants can help us avoid soil disease, depletion and overall soil stress while keeping pests at bay. He gives us a very complete list of symbiotic plants to grow together to help the garden do most of the work growing the way that it was intended to, by letting the plants feed off of each other in the most perfect relationships.

His other recent posts include Corporate Factory Farm Effects, Where he shows us the unfortunate results of the terrible practices of factory farming, and Cilantro Uses And Benefits, which is a detailed look into the amazing benefits of what some may call a common herb.

Soap Making For Dummies By @alaskatactical

Now let’s take a look at @alaskatactical who joined Steemit in January of this year. He writes about a variety of interesting topics including gunsmithing, reloading, canning, fermentation, and meat processing. He writes “I have a goal of being self sustaining, which is very challenging where we live (Alaska), with long winters and little sun.” His goal on Steemit, like many of us, is to share the knowledge he has, while gathering knowledge from others.

His featured post today is a simple to follow tutorial on how to make traditional cold process soap. I think many people are a bit hesitant to make their own soap because they think it might be a difficult process. I think this post does an excellent job of explaining it in detail, allowing anyone to easily follow along. This tutorial gives us a wonderful base recipe along with photos to walk us through the process. The best thing about this recipe is it is easy to make it your own, by adding your choice of essential oils, herbs, or oats you can customize it to your personal preferences.

His other recent posts include Assault Rifles Are Already Banned, a short and to the point description of what an “assault rifle” is, and what it is not, and Beard Oil Review, A quick review of a local, all natural product he purchased recently.

Drain To Waste: An Introduction To Hydroponic Systems By @mpglax

Next up, we have a brand new Steemian, @mpglax, who defines himself as a “vegetable grower, beekeeper, world traveler, nature enthusiast, and simple dude.” He only has a couple of posts on Steemit at the time, but his featured post on Hydroponics proves he has a lot to offer to the platform. My hope is that by getting him a larger audience, we can encourage him to share his knowledge on a subject so many homesteaders are experimenting with today. In his post he tells us the benefits of draining the nutrient solution rather than recirculating it, for larger scale hydroponic systems and how to minimize waste in the process. We are excited to see the next post on this topic!

How To Integrate New Chickens Into An Established Flock By @naturealwysright

Now we have a Steemian who joined in January of this year, @naturealwysright. He says that he recently quit his day job to farm his backyard in San Diego, Ca. His posts include amazing and informative videos through Dtube, about everything gardening, including composting, pruning, making biochar and even how to set your garden up for when you to go on vacation. He walks us through how he produces an abundance of food on his ¼ acre lot. He writes, “My goal is to teach as many people as I can about regenerative farming techniques and how they can grow healthy food for their family and even make money as a small scale urban farmer.” His methods include a “focus on creating the healthiest soil, plants and animals possible.” He is example that you don’t need a huge piece of land to grow your own food and, if you do it right, you can even make money in the process.

His featured post today is a wonderful Dtube guide on how to successfully introduce new members into an established chicken flock. This is something that many of us have had to do a time or two, and it can be a stressful situation for us and our birds. In the video we are walked through the process and reminded of some amazing natural solutions to help the flock deal with the transition. This video is just one of the many informative posts that can be found on his blog.

His other recent posts include Adding Compost To Plants: Do’s and Don’ts, A wonderful guide of how to use compost correctly and Do Farmers Ever Take Vacations, A look at watering and plant care strategies for time away from the garden.

This concludes the second edition of Helpie’s Homesteading Curation Report. We hope you will go and read the featured Steamians blogs and show them the love that their hard work deserves. We believe it is important for us to lift up good content on Steemit to help further grow the platform as a whole.

We are constantly searching for good content that deserves to be in the spotlight. If you come across a Homesteading post that you believe is worthy of promotion in this weekly report, feel free to tag @llfarms in the comments or send a DM message over discord.

Since our goal with curation is to help these Steemians grow on the platform, we will be paying them the SBD rewards received on this post payout. We believe this is the only fair way to curate these individuals content, to give them the rewards that their content has earned. We hope that if you choose to use these blogs in a post of your own, that you will join us in paying them for their content as well.

Thank you so much for reading and Happy Homesteading,

Thanks for another great curation report @llfarms!

This is such an awesome initiative! Tip!

Wow so many great articles to read through!

I am honored to be mentioned, thank you Helpie!
One of the main reasons I came to Steemit is because friends of mine told me about the amazing community on here. I can see that they were right, and it feels great to be part of it.
My main goal is to provide others with as much value as possible. I hope to get as many people growing their own food as possible, and helping them take the steps towards food freedom!

Oh I'm glad you found this, I wasn't sure how to get in contact with you to send the link. I love your mission and am so glad to have you on the platform. Your videos are my new favorite and I believe you will do very well here!

Awesome work as always @llfarms <3
