The place was created by man in the 70s. The incident stemming from the natural gas reserves in the region came to fruition when Soviet engineers ignited the excess natural gas that leaked through the pit.
The fire was supposed to go off in a few weeks, but for nearly 40 years there was a giant pit 70 meters wide, filled with boiling mud. It's called "The Gate of Hell" because if you get too close to the flames, you're likely to feel like you're in hell
