Masquerades are believed to be the dead in Igbo cultural milieu.

The appearance of masquerade is usually to bless the living and cleans the land of evil.

Atimes it is for merrymaking.

It heralds most occasions in Igbo culture such as burial, title taking, new yam festival and other festive periods.
