dictionary of english language
One of the most important English dictionary of 18. century written after by Samuel Johnson
after 8 years of effort, rewarding Johnson with lexicographer title. Interestingly, he started writing this dictionary after a contract with booksellers in London.
It wasn't the first English dictionary but it was the first one that was as extensive as 42773 quotations in explaining the meanings of the
words. It was criticised a lot for using humour and prejudice which now helps with understanding him and his era. Some of the famous definitions would be:
Oats: a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people
Lunch: as much food as one’s hand can hold.
Pension: an allowance, in England it is generally understood to mean pay given to a state hireling for treason to his country.
You can also access the preface of the dictionary for free.
