Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 46:31-34
So, today we have knocked out yet another chapter of the Tanakh. Joseph is instructing his family regarding the way they should act when they meet Pharaoh. As I said last week, the Mitsraim (Egyptians) regard shepherds as an abomination, so they need to be humble and know their place in the new culture they are entering.
Pharaoh has been gracious to Joseph for his wisdom an for saving the people of Mitsraim - can you see the parallels between this story and His story (history), that of Yeshua and his rough times in life, as a suffering servant, only to move on into his role as the ruler of all in the future? The similarities are many and profound if you look into them. Of course, Pharaoh is the ruler of the known world at the time and the famine brought many nations into his service as they came paying for their food with what they had, maybe even the sovereignty if that is all they had left.
If it were not for Joseph, the ruler would not have all those bragging rights so of course, he will be willing to grant them a place to settle. See next week, as we read about the meeting with Pharaoh. How will the brothers do?

Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. And the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.' When Pharaoh calls you and says, 'What is your occupation?' you shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,' in order that you may dwell in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians."
