The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 10, Post #5

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 10:16-20

In today's reading, Far'oh talks about sin. He also mentions that his sin is against (and he said the name of the one true God) YHVH. They knew how to say His name back then and there is power in the name of the Creator.

I am starting to lose track of how many times, in his desperation due to plagues, Far'oh has said he was sorry and asked Moshe (Moses) to plead for him in prayer to God. He says, "forgive my sin, please..." and follows that up with "just this once."

Moshe did as he asked and prayed. The God made a very strong wind blow (the Hebrew does not say "west wind") and blew the locust Yama-soof (toward the Sea of Reed), which is called the Red Sea today. The "ma" part of this indicates in the direction of the Red Sea. In order to name the Red Sea alone, you would say yom suf (the 'o' in yom is like that of bowl and the 'u' in suf is the vowels in pool). The text says that not one locust remained in all the land.

Then YHVH made the heart of Far'oh strong and he refused, yet again, to let the people of Israel go.

The Tanakh, as well as the b'rEet hadaShah (new testament), mention this event more than any other work of God. The other one that is mentioned quite a bit - Creator of heaven and earth, all the heavens and of the seas, and all that is in them. That one is more of an identifier of who is speaking before He speaks. The Exodus is also used as an identifier when YHVH is about to speak saying, "who, with a mighty hand, lead his people out of bondage."

Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against YHVH your God, and against you. Now therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and plead with YHVH your God only to remove this death from me." So he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with YHVH. And YHVH turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. But YHVH hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go.
