Hello my dear Steemians,

Today I wanted to write for the contest that is running by @helengutier2 here is the link:

What does going to an emergency room mean to you?

For me, when I hear Emergency Room, there are two different pictures popping up in my mind:

  • First, it is a series called “Emergency Room” where the main actor was George Clooney, he is my favourite actor, despite of being aware about this endless series I have never watch any of it from beginning till the end.

  • The second, strong feeling about my work, being a surgeon we work very close with doctors in Emergency room. They received the patients first, that is why it is also called “Front Door”, they assess them and have provisional diagnosis and decide where the patients will go, what department or what speciality. That means for me when I hear Emergency room it is associated with work

You went to an emergency room and you were seen immediately because your life was at risk or you had to wait.

When anyone who is very sick comes to Emergency department, they report to the receptionists and usually explain what problem they have. If anyone will say that a person has for example acute abdominal pain, vomiting blood, having high temperature they will be seen relatively quickly. Understandably, if someone came because of colicky abdominal pain but otherwise well or someone had a fall and has swollen joint, then it might take some time till the patient will be seen. Receptionist usually alert the doctors if any suspicion of an unwell patient then the patient will be brought tin triage room and then will be decided if it is minor, major or Resuscitation department needed.

Do some research and name some of the criteria for determining what is an emergency and what isn't.

Emergencies are:

  • bleeding, any kind like gastrointestinal bleeding upper or lower, vaginal

  • difficulties to breath both adult, children

  • chest pain

  • unconsciousness

  • polytrauma

  • suicide or overdose

The conditions that are not emergencies and could be referred to General Practitioner:

  • abdominal pain that is last few months and there is no change at the time of presentation to emergency department

  • small superficial injuries without problem of movement of limbs and no neurological deficit

  • if a person has run out of his tablets

  • constipation

Why do you think hospital emergency rooms are always full of people and never empty?

In our hospital the waiting area of Emergency Department is always full, sometimes the waiting time could be upto 3 hours. The department is trying its best usually we have target of max three hours. Of course after 10 PM and over night sometimes could be a little bit more quite. Sometimes on Weekend during day it could be the case that waiting area is almost empty, it is usually never completely empty sometimes 1 or 2 people.

I am inviting following users for contest @dequeen, @memamun, @sitaraindaryas

Saludos y bendiciones.
