Steps On How To Prepare Jute Soup 🍲 (Ewedu)

  • I will like to share with us briefly what is Jute leaf itself before proceeding to how to prepare it into soup.

Jute leaves may not be known to many, but they are a part of the jute plant that's mostly cultivated in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Jute leaves are used as a food source in these regions; in fact, they are said to add a distinct flavour to food and also act as thickeners in soups, stews and sauces. Jute leaves are also known as saluyot, ewedu or lalo, depending on the region they are being cultivated or cooked in. The leaves have slightly toothed edges. When harvested young, jute leaves are generally flavourful and tender; on the other hand, older leaves tend to be fibrous and woody. Scientifically known as Corchorus Olitorius, parts of jute plants are used in many ways. While jute stems are used to make rope, paper and a variety of other products, jute leaves are not just for culinary uses but also are known for their medicinal properties.

In most parts of Nigeria, they are prepared into a sticky soup known as ewedu along with other ingredients including sweet potato, dried small fish or shrimp.

People prepare soups, stews, curries, vegetable dishes, and sometimes teas and tisanes using jute leaves.

The leaves tend to get gluey or sticky, like bhindi or okra, which is another common vegetable thickener.

Like spinach and other leafy green vegetables, jute leaves can be cooked whole or can be loosely chopped so as to blend better with other foods and ingredients.

Jute Leaf Preparation

Ingredients Needed.

  • Fresh Jute Leaves ( Required quantity)
  • Locust beans ( 3 teaspoon)
  • Potash ( Pinch)

Step 1.

You have to purchase a clean fresh Jute leaves from a good source this is because if you are not very careful you will be given a roasten or spoilt Jute leaves in the Market that is the reason why you must double check. After the purchase from the market or farm, as for me I went to the farm and fetch mine which I used you can see the picture below.

After which I went to the farm to fetch my required quantity to be used, I have chip in one note here, you must take into consideration that if you want the best out of the Jute soup it must be eaten at least once not to be kept inside the refrigerator for the next day or three day after. Not advisable because it will loose it original delicious taste and aroma.

Step 2.

I seperated the leaves from the stalk or plant itself. This will actually take your time if the Jute leaves are many but if it not much it will take lesser time.
