15 Foods that are Healthy and Cheap

This list is sorted out in no particular order.

  1. Lentils
    Lentils can be used for a variety of food including salads, soups, stews and much more. Lentils are an easy bean to cook because they don't require any sort of pre-soaking and cook quickly. A full serving of Lentils 1/4 of a cup and cost about 10 cents. You can get a full 16-ounce bag for about $1.30.

  2. Store-Brand Egg Substitute
    These are great for omelets or cooking with fried rice. A whole serving is 1/4 of a cup and is generally around 30 cents per serving or a 16-ounce carton goes for around 2 to 3 dollars.

  3. Canned or Jarred Marinara Sauce
    A full server is 1/2 a cup. This will run you about 30 cents per serving or you can buy a 24 to 28-ounce can or jar for about 2 dollars.

  4. Canned Refried Beans
    A serving is 1/2 a cup and each can contains about 3.5 servings. Each serving costs around 30 cents and can buy a can for a little over a dollar.

  5. Russet Potatoes
    Russet Potatoes are great for breakfast. A serving is a medium or large potatoe and will cost around 30 cents each. You can buy a 5-pound bag of Russet Potatoes for about 4 dollars that will usually have 11-13 potatoes.

  6. Old-Fashioned Oats
    Great for cereal and crumb toppings for dessert. A whole serving is 1/2 a cup and will cost around 13 cents. A 13-ounce container will cost about 4 dollars.

  7. 100% Whole-Wheat Bread
    A serving is about 2 slices and will cost about 18 cents. A 22-ounce loaf of bread will cost about 2 dollars. Each loaf will have around 22 slices.

  8. Frozen Soybeans
    A full serving is about 1/2 a cup and costs about 60 cents. Generally, you can buy a 16-ounce bag for a little less than 3 dollars.

  9. Brown Rice
    A serving is around 1/4 a cup and will cost 18 cents or for a full pound will cost a bit less than 2 dollars.

  10. Whole-Wheat or Multigrain Pasta
    A serving for most people is about 2 ounces. In a box, you can expect around 7 servings. Each serving will cost around 25 cents and a box usually goes for around $1.69.

  11. Non-Fat Greek Yogurt
    Believe it or not, Greek Yogurt isn't a very healthy option but remains on this list because of its generally cheap prices. A serving will generally be 6 to 8-ounces and will cost about 90 cents each.

  12. Frozen Vegetable.
    Frozen foods usually taste horrible but are a viable option for eating healthy and saving money. A serving is about 1 cup and will go for around 25 cents. A bag will contain about 6-8 cups and will cost about $1.75 to $2.25.

  13. Fresh Bagged Spinach
    Now generally speaking people hate spinach but I for one love spinach especially if I have to choose between lettuce of spinach. About 4 cups can make a server and will cost around 70 cents. A 9-ounce bag will cost around 2 dollars.

  14. Canned Tuna
    It's important to note that because of its high amounts of mercury that a pregnant mother must not eat more than 6-ounces of Tuna per week. A serving is about 3-ounces and a can contains around 2 servings. A can costs about $1.40 to 2 dollars.

  15. Whole Wheat Pinta Bread
    Pinta Bread is absolutely great for making pizzas. A serving is about a single pita pocket. A serving will run you 30-55 cents .
