Treating MS with Food and Functional Medicine (Part Two)

in #health8 years ago

We celebrated a year that my daughter (15) has been following the Wahls Protocol for her MS.  She has been symptom free for 12 months.  We just had her MRI to check for lesions and even though there were two more the trend is very promising!

September 2015 - first MRI - 8 lesions

December 2015 (3 months later) - 6 new lesions

March 2016 (3 months later)- 5 new lesions.  It was after this MRI that we were ready to start the metal detox.

June 2016 (3 months later)  we canceled this MRI as it was during exams.

September 2016 (6 month since last MRI) we were expecting at least 10 new lesions, but the results came back with 2 small new lesions with the older lesions shrinking.

We were very happy as it is showing that the disease is slowing in progression and what we are doing is working.  All her other tests scores were awesome and they had originally told us that because we are refusing MS drugs that they wanted to see her every 3 months.  They have now moved that to every 6 months.  Definitely something to celebrate.  The other interesting thing this time was that even though they still recommended the MS drugs (study show that the drugs *might* reduce relapses, but in the long term study they showed no benefit in comparison to those not taking MS drugs...plus those taking the drugs were not as healthy due to side effects), they were not pushing like they have in the past.

I was chatting with Dr. Terry Wahls and she thought it might be due to the fact that she has been granted 1 million dollars from the National MS Society to study her diet and MS symptoms.  :)

The next step for my daughter involves continuing eating level 2 and 3 Wahls, waiting for the results of her hair analysis, then start looking at the viral markers in her body and deal with those.

Banana Bread (grain free, process sugar free, soy free, dairy free, legume free)

4 local pastured eggs, 4 ripe bananas, 1/2 cup almond butter, 4 tablespoons of grass fed butter, 1/2 cup coconut flour, 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, pinch pink salt.  Mix and pour into loaf pan and bake for 1 hour at 350 (pour into muffin tin and bake for 35 min at 350)

*feel free to add nuts, seeds, cranberries, blueberries,  good life chocolate chips or whatever you fancy*
