Health Benefits of Oolong Tea

in #health7 years ago

Proper tea does not only taste good - it also has many health benefits. The Chinese have known that for thousand of years. Whilst in the western world green teas and matcha tea is getting more and more popular, Oolong tea could be a great alternative - as studies are showing us the health benefits of oolong tea.

 What is Oolong?

Oolong Tea - also known as wulong or ulong tea is particularly known for his flavourful taste and has became one of the most popular teas under many tea enthusiasts (like me). The semi-fermented tea enchants our tongues with a sweet, slightly flowery flavor. The taste itself lies somewhere between black and green tea. This has to do with the processing of the tea. The tea leaves only partially oxidize. The flavor of the tea is dependent on the degree of oxidation and tends to be more strongly associated with black tea or green tea.

Being one of the most popular and traditional types of tea in China and Taiwan, Oolong can provide strong health benefits when consumed on a regular basis. Oolong is packed with antioxidants and polyphenols combined with catechin and caffeine it has everything to fight free radicals.

What are the benefits of Oolong Tea?

Apart from the good taste and enjoyment there are so many other reasons that speak for the Oolong. The benefits of green tea are much better known, but it should only be a question of time until the positive qualities of the oolong spread. Green tea is always said to be beneficial when it comes to losing weight. This has been proved independently and can be read in some scientific studies. Also Oolong tea has a reputation that it can have a support to the weight regulation. Surely a sales-promoting thesis, which indeed can be proved. Oolong contains high concentrations of so-called polyphenols. This substance is able to bind fat during digestion. Instead of being absorbed by the body, it is now excreted by the bowel.  As a bonus, polyphenols prevent the dreaded deposition of fats in the vessels and has an anti-inflammatory effect. They also reduce the individual risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and stroke. And that is a large group of serious diseases, often leading the list of causes of death in the industrialized countries. The regular enjoyment of Oolong could possibly change this. It also strengthens the immune system and there is even evidence that Oolong reduces plaques and improves oral hygiene.

 Other benefits of Oolong Tea

  • Increased energy consumption
  • Boosts your metabolism - causing weight loss
  • Promotes healthy skin
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Prevents tooth decay

Conclusion: Oolong tea really that special?

Surely there are already more than enough health related reasons to have a regular Oolong. And even if there is some evidence to health benefits, it is still not a miracle cure. But it can clearly have a positive impact on your health. Combined with a healthy balanced diet, sports and a balanced lifestyle it can help improving your health. If you haven’t tried Oolong tea already, you should give it a try - not only because of the health benefits but also because it tastes good. I recommend to go to a proper tea house and try different Oolongs so you can pick your favorite and hopefully you can then integrate your tea in your diet. My favorite Oolongs are Eastern Beauty Oolong and Duck Shit Oolong.
