Nutrition: Super Fundamentals for Health

in #health7 years ago (edited)

A massive topic with many facets beliefs and contradictory evidence. What I say here is from what I've learnt, researched myself, often tried myself and provides me with energy, vitality and importantly yumminess.

Keeping with super basic stuff:

1: Eat a plant based and whole food diet. Plant based meaning mostly, but not exclusively made up of plants. Supplementing this with some meats and treats. Remembering this 1st puts you way ahead of the pack, not to mention make your parents happy. The importance of an assortment of antioxidants on disease and mortality rates cannot be emphasised enough. The Fibre to feed Good Gut Bacteria, the concentrations of certain compounds....all make it pretty much the best thing to do.

2: Eat Fat. Avocados, Olive oil, beef fat, coconut oil, butter, all that good stuff. Despite its demonisation over the past 50 years, it turns out fats is awesome for you. Just misunderstood. Quick rules for fat; the less its cook the better. If you can, get it fresh and from the source (the rule with everything, really). In general you want to avoid cheaper vegetable fats such a corn, soybean and to a lesser extent canola oil, due to the fact they go rancid easily from light, heat and air. Not to mention they're refined, meaning they're more concentrated and your body in all likelihood finds itself unable to process it efficiently. Much like sugar. Sugar is refined, sugar cane isn't and in that form it's contains more good stuff and fibre. My Personal theory is that the increase in mental Illness correlates with the anti fat movement. Our brains are the fattest organ in your body and may consist of at least 60 percent fat. Take that as you wish...

3: Sugar and processed stuff, there's no need to eliminate completely but having low sugar habits will be a godsend in the long run. I find the best way to avoid it and to make good food choices in general is to eat super clean alone at home and when you go out or eat with others, relax your rules a bit and enjoy.

As you can see my final mini-point is that you have to enjoy it, otherwise you'll never stick to it!
