But, have you heard of salt soap bar before?
The idea of making a bar soap packed with salt came from a respected teacher of mine, who is a professional dietitian. She has many cancer patients who suffer dry, flaky skin condition after chemotherapy. Her treatment for them is usually bathing in salt water few times a day.
However, most Malaysian families do not even have a bath tub at home, so she came up with the idea to incorporate salt in the soap bar to make the treatment easier. The result turns out to be really great. Her patients can now enjoy salt therapy in every shower session!
How does the salt help with dry skin?
A research study shows that bathing in magnesium-rich salt water significantly improves skin barrier function. The barrier function describes how well it protects skin from the external environment. Salt treatment also increases the skin moisturizing level and eases psoriasis-related itchy.
What are the other benefits of salt treatment for a cancer patient?
1. Detox
Mineral-rich salt draws out impurities and toxins from the skin and this is extremely helpful for cancer patients who just undergo chemotherapy.
2. Improve blood circulation
A warm salt bath improves movement of blood throughout the body and promotes perspiration. This is especially important for cancer patients who have limited physical activities.
3. Relieve pain
The magnesium in salt reduces inflammation of the muscles and joints and helps relax the muscles, therefore helping relieve pain and soreness of cancer patients.
I have seen salt soap bars being sold in various places before, but could not tell its authenticity. Thank you for this informative post, @natalielo! :)
Hi Cally, you can try reading the ingredient list next time when you see a salt bar. If the salt (INCI: sodium chloride) is on the top 5 of the list, you can rest assure the soap bar contains significant amount of salt, which will provide better result on the skin. A high content salt soap tend to 'weep' in humid climate because salt attracts moisture from the air. If the soap doesn't really 'weep' and doesn't have obvious salt crystal on the surface, the salt content in the soap might be very low and won't be as effective.
Ahhh, super awesome tips from you, @natalielo! Okay, I shall remember this! :D Thanks a bunch!
