❤️ You are beautiful! Love yourself just the way you are! ❤️

I was at the Thailand airport, when I saw an odd advertisement about buying “whiting cream.” They were selling different creams that would make your skin as white as milk. Seeing this advertisement really saddened me because there are so many people who want to be “someone” else.

In America, it is common for people to want to be “tanner.” People go to extremes, to achieve this goal. They lie in tanning beds, bask in the sun, or apply spray tans to get darker. While they may temporary “achieve” a bronze look, they are at much higher risk for skin cancer.

What is ironic is that people across the world want what they don’t have. The people in Asia want to be “whiter.” While, the people in America want to be darker.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If only people in the world could see that no matter what your skin complexion is, we are all beautiful.

What are your thoughts about this topic?

I know in countries like South Korea, Japan, and China, having dark skin is seen as bad because it shows that you're "poor". Anyone tanned in those countries are seen as hard laborers and are considered "poor". That archaic mindset still exists thanks to the old people keeping it alive.

I'll never forget teaching some South Korean teenagers and some of them talked about how they felt they were ugly because they didn't have western features. It made me sad to see how poisoned their minds were thanks to the adverts that promote western standard beauty.

To be fair, we as humans, are attracted to things that look pretty. It's human nature and that will never EVER change. To go to the extremes to be something you are not and never will be is something I don't agree with. If I wanted to look better physically, i'd go to the gym, eat right, and wear right clothing.

Just my $0.02.

Have fun over there!

It is very difficult to buy ANY form of skin care in Thailand for men or women that DOESNT contain whitening agents, they always make a big deal of it.
Its incredibly sad, but until Asians drop this idea that white is better, nothing will change. Even within Thailand, darker skinned Thais are looked down upon. Its a very deep seated prejudice which isnt helped by the cosmetic companies.
No idea what the answer is no one believes you when you say love darker skin. Extremely sad.

Well, it's not just cosmetic companies... First, it all starts within the culture; people who were dark, were those who were working in the fields. If you had dark skin, it meant you a farmer or something, and therefore low class. In Asia, especially places like Korea, the idea of "face" the mask you wear in society, and to others, is very important. So, ideally people didn't want to look like they were from these lower classes, to save their face. Next; in comes Western aesthetic obsessionism, followed by cosmetics companies developing products to aid in the cultural push of "face."
It's interesting.

That's exactly the explanation ! but the cosmetic companies, in my opinion, have an obligation not to promote this 'fair is best' fallacy, and at the same time people have got to lose this class snobbery. It's extremely difficult, but I think adverts by the cosmetic companies, using darker skinned actresses and models, and them emphasising the other benefits of their products has to be the way forward.

Well it's an interesting issue for sure. If you believe that, then you should say, equally, that there should not be promotion to go out in the sun and tan yourself, there shouldn't be tanning solons, commercials shouldn't promote muscular men, etc...
I honestly don't think it's the companies responsibility to change the viewpoint of society. If it makes them more money, of course they will promote it, but that's business.
I feel it's more on the parenting, and education to push the idea of this false narrative. It makes it difficult when parents themselves believe it's important.
Yes, media does play a huge role in this too.

I disagree because tanning is simply about 'beautification' whereas skin lightening has, as you rightly pointed out, a background in race and class bigotry.

Your topic is so truly powerful. If only we can love ourselves and appreciate ourselves then people will want get to respect us too.
I’m actually very dark, back in the day I used to want to get lighter. I no longer care, I’m now happy the way I am.

You’re very beautiful yourself.

I am also surprised we are asia. Wanting the white is not grateful that has been given the god, another case with the American people who visit Bali just want to bask but the skin is not black. actually we already have their own nature. It's just that we forget who we are. 😊
