I think setting goals is always positive. The problem is the time frame and selectively doing it opportunistic times of the year.

People feel as though by gassing themselves up first, they are some how more likely to achieve their goals. That, rather than just bucking up and getting on with it.

Great point @honeybee. One of my mentors used to say, 'if it matters do it now - don't wait until Monday!'
