Child abuse and neglect. Are you attentive?
I want to talk about victims of abuse and neglect. A child is the most vulnerable victim. To solve this problem, all of us need to understand its causes, nature and context of occurrence and its consequences for victims.
How can we understand it?
Injury or abuse done by caretaker or other person can be manifested in many forms. The severely shaken infant is the cause of death of one third of them. It also is the reason of behavioral abnormalities, mental retardation, cerebral palsy or blindness. Sexual abuse and neglect and battered children are other forms of child abuse.
How can professionals help?
Working for victims of child abuse and neglect depends on the age and their environmental factors. Social workers can give their services in therapeutic day cares for the purpose of improving development and cognitive skills of victims. They must also deal with emotional, behavioral and attachment related problems. For examples: play sessions by other students acting as a encouraging role model for victim students. Social workers can also work with families and provide them education and therapy. The reporting by health professional if they suspect child abuse or neglect is compulsory by the law of various countries.
How can YOU help them?
Early detection can increase chances of safety and would help prevent serious injuries of child abuse victims. Do you pay attention to the behavior and health of children around you or in your own house? If you suspect domestic abuse and marital problems in the parents of the child, pay special attention. Do they behave in a very indifferent and weird way? Do they get easily scared or avoid playing with other children? Children at the age of 3, 4 and more can also share if they trust you. Earn their trust and encourage them to share what they are facing. This issue is very common and must be talked about. Childhood traumatic incidents have a very negative effect later in life. Please seek help from professionals if you think a child is in danger.

Thanks for writing about thos topic. It is very important to inform the masses. You can as well let a child draw a tree for you. If it has a lot of holes on them and imperfections it means that something had happened to the kid. It works.
Yes, art can manifest the harm done to a child when he draws unconsciously. We need an eye to identify the damage and help as soon as possible.
Do you have advise on how a grown up can better live with whats happened to them when they were small? I ve been in Therapie for two years so far and still struggling. How long until it gets better
It depends on the kind of therapy you are getting. Most professionals use CBT and psychoanalysis these days to treat this problem. Psychoanalysis can take months and years and CBT has a limit of 8 to 12 weeks. It also depends on your pace of recovery and how you get along with the therapist.
Thanks. I will look into CBT and inform myself about it. Ive had behavioral therapy(dont know if this is the right term). It helped me to get a grip on life again. Now I am waiting for a place with a psychotherapy to get deeper into the issue.
In trauma therapy the confrontation of the past can help in later life. Acceptance at first , talking about it with someone you trust and not feeling guilty about the incident (if the child remembers) can help recover.
You just need to find the right person and things will get better in time. Give yourself some time :)
