Haiku Contest #6: Old Friends, Take 2
Hi all. So... just a few days after I posted my previous haiku contest—Haiku Contest #6: Old Friends, we had HF20, which caused more problems than I was expecting. A few of you reached out to me on Discord about an extension and I thought that was a good idea. So here we are—Contest #6 extended, or take 2.
The original post still stands, but I will recopy all info below to make it easy. If you were one of the few who upvoted/resteemed and left an entry on the old post, no need to do so again. Feel free to enter more than one haiku, however.
Because I'm sure this extension will get some of the same autovotes my first post did, I am increasing the prize amounts (and changing from Steem to SBD). New prizes:
1st place - 3 SBD
2nd place - 1.5 SBD
3rd place - 1 SBD
And new finish date: Wednesday, Oct 11th (Japan time)
With that out of the way... another week! Good luck!
Welcome to the sixth haiku contest!
The theme this time around is old friends. You can follow that theme as literally or broadly as you want.
Give me a great haiku using the theme. Also keep in mind that haiku traditionally reflect the current season in some way. In Japan right now that would be late summer or early autumn, but your current season may vary depending on where in the world you are.
Haiku Contest Rules
(please read carefully)
Upvote and Resteem this post. The upvote is to give me enough funds to pay the winners, and the resteem is to spread the word to draw more people in.
Write a haiku.
- Post it in the comments to this post
- Make your own post with the haiku and a link to this post
You may include a title or a headnote. A headnote is a short bit of text that sets the scene for the haiku. Some haiku poets use them (Basho and Shiki did) and some don't. You may also include a photo if you want.
No syllable requirement, just keep it short. Aim for one breath. You can read my thoughts on syllable counts in English haiku here.
- Nor does it have to be three lines. See my thoughts here.
In addition to the theme for this contest, it should have some kind of reference to nature and have a juxtaposition of images. I write should not must. If you think your haiku is strong enough to do without, go for it. I am not stuck in tradition and I welcome new creative ideas.
Consider this quote from Jack Kerouac:
[A] Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella.
Have at it!
(Psst—If you are stuck for ideas, go read some of the translated haiku in my Haiku of Japan series. Here is an index of the first 100 translations.
I encourage you to tell your friends on Discord or steemit chat. The more people we can get involved here, the more fun we can have. It makes it tougher for me to judge, but I consider that a good problem to have.
Sample
Here is a haiku I used in the article referenced above.
evening
snow beating down
my son is snoring
You can see I give a nod to the season, and there is also a shift in the action as we move from the scene (lines 1 and 2) to my son.
Another Sample
This one, a classic from Buson:
on the temple bell
sleeping
a butterfly
You can read more about that haiku here.
An American Haiku Sample
And here is one of my favorites from Jack Kerouac:
No telegram today
only more leaves
fell.
Close Date and Prizes
Contest will go for 7 days, so that means the final day you can submit is next Wednesday, Oct 11th (Japan time).
No sponsor this time so prizes will be a little different.
- 2 SBD for first place
- 1 SBD for second place
- .5 SBD for third place
Also, if this post exceeds $6 in upvotes, I will sponsor all three winners for 1 share of @steembasicincome.
I will be the sole judge but I may consult with some others to get their opinions.
Have fun!

@linnyplant this is my first time. Not sure if I posted it right or not
You did it, Stormy! ❤️<3❤️<3❤️
Upvoted with love as always.
Now, I would’ve enjoyed seeing you and Hank smiling here, but I’m not complaining! I’m just glad you’re back on steemit. We’ll just tell Hank we’ve plastered his face all over steemit....🤣
BTW: it’s just a case of using the insert image option, you must have done link instead.
ALSO: Incude your original post link -important!
We lived once,
Now we wait together.
The wind blows,
And parts the stems.
Post Link
There you go @linnyplant. Now I need to sleep as it's 2 AM here :D
Remind me on Friday and I'll do a review on my Neo2 Word Processor or a entry to the comic contest. Meanwhile I need to do some studying...
If you do another, I’ll of course cheer you on! 2 posts in succession? I hope you don’t break a posting muscle....
You did it too, @carn!
Upvoted with love, and well, because I harangued you into it. ❤️🤣
See? It wasn’t so hard? Another post to add to your limited collection. I’ll pop over to the link later this evening and write about what a good sport you are. Hehe.
Non-entries, for you:
Michael:
We haven't spoken
in months.
We meet—
Months falls away.
Food for Thought:
The books are warm,
heated by past encounters.
I dig in, again.
Don’t be a difficult cat. Food for Thought is a legit entry and very good. We can’t have everyone submitting non-entries for poor @dbooster’s contest. Of course, this is my second non-entry, I think I out did myself this time. 🤣 He makes the prompts too hard for me.
I don't like the contest part, so I always only enter as non-entries. They are meant as gifts for David, in hopes he'd enjoy them, rather than trying for any of the prizes.
It's not me sitting out due to thinking they're not good enough, and don't take this to be me saying I think they are great. I'm just delivering them as gifts, not as contest entries. That also allowed David to ask me for judging help last time around :3
P.S. Thanks for the compliment, and I suspect the whole point of the prompt is to challenge you, Linny :)
Haha, I read what I wrote and thought that it could be read as such, but was too lazy to fix. Decided who would notice, but I forget it’s you I’m commenting to. Bad Linny.
Anyway, I like reading this contest and I’d genuinely like to see more entries, especially thoughtful ones. In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have commented. I’ll refrain from commenting on your stuff in future. Have a nice day, cat!
Oh, stop it, Linny :P
You know you're welcome to comment. I'm just explaining the logic behind my non-entries. But, even if I'm not competing, the entries are there for people to read, and hopefully enjoy :)
Slowly fills
Autumnal emptiness,
A cold drop
For you, I tried, I really did. I wrote lots of different Haiku for this theme: old friend. I read it to my husband and he was unimpressed with every one. I got mad and wrote this one dedicated to him:
Husband turns nose up
At my haiku
Wanker
It had him laughing. Now, when I read him another, he just says, ‘I liked your wanker one better.’
So I give up and will sit this one out. 😡
that'll show him
I'm telling you, submit the one you showed me privately
As requested, the Monster haiku. It is an entry or a gift, whatever works!
Behind the skeleton’s door
Sits the Count, ghouls and Narcissus
Old friends.

Palm trees welcome them with open arms.
Old friends reunite.
My contest got whacked by the hard fork too! Will post my haiku soon.
