Hacking in itself is amazing. Someone in the comfort of their couch can render multi-billion dollar companies in a few minutes. Of course, not all successful hacks are done in the comforts of one's home and requires more physical effort-- dumpster diving, anyone?

There are many facts about hacking that amaze me for one of the two following reasons: 1. the hack is a testament to the hackers' abilities or 2. our inability to focus on cyber security is a shock in itself.

So, here are 3 facts about hacking that amaze me:

1. The most expensive hacks were e-mail worms. MyDoom, the most expensive hack in history was worth $38 billion in damages. In 2004, it gave hackers the ability to remotely access victims' computers. That year, it was estimated that 25% of e-mails were infected with the virus. Last time it was seen used was 2009 in South Korea.

2. You can't Trust your Employees. We often imagine hackings to be a mysterious Russian spy. While those kinds of situations happen, some hackers might actually be closer than you think. According to a 2009 Symantec study, 59% of employees have admitted to stealing company information. So, be careful of your employees because they might be the reason to your hack-- perfect case in point-- Ashley Madison's 2015 attack.

3. Small Businesses are often the target to hacks-- not large corporations. A lot of us think of the Apple store, Sony, and Home Depot attacks when we are prompted with the word "hack." However, a majority of hacks are actually targeting small businesses. This is because small businesses don't invest nearly as much in cyber security as their corporate counterparts. In fact, only 42% of small businesses in the U.S. say that they invest any money in cyber attacks.
