Gridcoin Poll: How much GRC should be allocated for the weekly GRC community hangouts?

What's the topic that requires a poll?

I have created a pre-cursor to a foundation proposal for funding the Gridcoin Community Hangouts in the future. It will be up to the Gridcoin community how much GRC will be requested.

The Gridcoin community has produced 12 hangouts thus far (very much so worth listening to) for free (initial hangout earnings were spent on hangout post promotion).

GRC will help cover costs (soundcloud sub), editing work payment (@Peppernrino puts several hours into each episode! Perhaps 25% of the total voted upon funding would be sufficient?), potentially covering microphone costs for community members and distributing GRC to attendees and speakers (to encourage community participation/attendance).

The specific method in which attendees will be rewarded is still to be fully ironed out:

  • If we were to follow beyondbitcoin's payment model then only those who suggest topics & take charge of leading the discussion on the topic would get paid (which for 80% of the GRC hangouts would be me - not fair unless others step up their game ;D).
  • If we were to distribute GRC equally to all attendees then we may see this mechanism cheated (fake/spoofed clients).
  • We could potentially reward users who speak at some point throughout the hangouts, but that would be incredibly difficult to keep track of.

What is the poll question?

How much GRC should the foundation distribute within the GRC community hangouts per week? (Perhaps this could have been phrased more articulately..lol).

What are the poll options?

  • $50
  • $100
  • $150
  • $200
  • $300
  • $500

How can I vote?

Windows users:

Launch the voting menu

  • Launch Gridcoin client & fully sync the blockchain.
  • If your wallet is encrypted, fully unlock the wallet (not just for 'staking only').
  • Click "Advanced" , then click "Voting" to launch the voting menu.

Within the voting menu:

  • Right click on the poll with the title "vote on grc mumble hangout reward distribution and payment"
  • Click the "Vote" button in the context menu that appears. A voting window should appear.
  • Check one (or more) of the check boxes.
  • Click the "Place Vote" button. If you get a warning/error, fully unlock your wallet and repeat the above steps.

Linux users:

QT Wallet:

Navigate to the debug console

  • Launch the Gridcoin wallet (QT) & fully sync the blockchain.
  • Fully unlock your wallet.
  • Navigate to the Debug Console (Help - Debug Window - Console (tab) )

Copy the following command & replace XXX with a valid $ quantity:

execute vote vote_on_grc_mumble_hangout_reward_distribution_and_payment XXX

Terminal client:

  • Launch the Gridcoin wallet & fully sync the blockchain.
  • Fully unlock your wallet (not just for staking)

Copy the following command & replace XXX with a valid $ quantity:

gridcoinresearchd execute vote vote_on_grc_mumble_hangout_reward_distribution_and_payment XXX

There is a lot to discuss about the way the money is distributed !
You suggest 3 methods, but there may be others.
Maybe a little of each :
40% of the total for "administrators" of the hangout (like you and @peppernrino)
40% for speakers
and 20% for attendees.

But it can be complicated to do that every week.

There would be overlap between speakers & administrators though, do you think that would be fair?

By 'speakers' do you mean those who participate in discussions or those who take charge of discussions like in the BeyondBitcoin hangouts?

Speakers : everyone who is sharing something new in the discussion
Administrators : those who are taking charge the discussion + the editing work

do you think that would be fair?

If someone is leading the discussion, and also sharing interesting things like others speakers, technically he participates in 2 differents ways. Or we can suppose that administrators are already paid enough ! ;)
Anyway, it's not really for me to judge whether this is fair or not ! :D

I believe this is a great idea as it will promote attendance and encourage, hopefully, people with a more diverse mix of skill sets to get involved in the Hangout and as a result the Gridcoin community.

We do need an increase in the attendance of technically orientated people across all spheres in order to continue our technical progress.

However we also need attendees who have skill sets such as marketing, social media, web design, general business, students, finance etc.

Most of our in depth discussions, presently, are of a technical nature and not everyone may feel knowledgeable enough to participate in those discussions.
We need to encourage the participation of people who have the other, very important, skills we need in order to 'future proof' Gridcoin and ensure its success by actively pushing it out in to the general population.

The maximum reward for participation will ensure the maximum quality of participation!!

The maximum reward for participation will ensure the maximum quality of participation!!

You're right that rewarding participation will ensure involvement but we can not neglect the work done by @cm-steem and @peppernrino for these hangouts. I think it should be rewarded in some ways.

Most of our in depth discussions, presently, are of a technical nature and not everyone may feel knowledgeable enough to participate in those discussions.

There have certainly been instances of new users not understanding what on earth we're talking about when we've been discussing technical Gridcoin/BOINC topics.

I agree that rewarding users will lead to more attendees/participation. If each attendee walks away from a hangout with a small task/goal for the week then we'll be a very productive crypto community! :D

I don't think attendees should get anything. Instead, the funds should go to server costs and to compensate the ones who use their spare time to publish the material, that is @cm-steem and @peppernrino.

While it would be neat to get greater attendance, attendee reward isn't going to attract the crowd we want. Remember that this is currently a fairly niche topic. You have to have discoverered BOINC, be into cryptocurrencies AND be curious enough to dig into the news channels to find that there is a hangout (or podcast). Maybe we should see it more as an open podcast. Once the listener count increases I'm convinced that so will the attendee counts.
