Gridcoin Community Hangout #018

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings! Follow him on Steem! :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

017 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topic suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

It was pretty awesome having the folks from #curecoin come in yesterday.

I would like to revisit new #BOINC project ideas. I actually added a couple of things earlier today. :)

https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@cm-steem/brainstorming-new-boinc-projects

Also, talk about new projects:

-formation of "Science Coin Consortium"... working title... $GRC/$CURE/$FLDC
-creation of a block explorer site for all 3 coins
-chat with devs from #curecoin, hopefully
-integration with http://affero.org/ (distributed FOSS licensing)
-cryptoid/chainz? $10/month tl;dr: a node that provides a block explorer and API etc, as well as being listed on their app. https://www.curecoin.net/inside-curecoin/block-explorer

Science coin consortium (SCC | SC^2) OR distributed computing crypto consortium (DCCC | DC^3) ?

The later could involve Maidsafe, Golem and perhaps at a stretch Sia/Storj.

Thoughts?

I'm all for forming a mutually beneficial crypto consortium though.

Idk about cryptoid/chainz, however that does work out to be the rough cost of running a full node at the moment for gridcoin.. what kind of connection count do these nodes have for other coins? If only 8 that's a bit meh..

Just to let ya know-- I did get your e-mail and I'm very interested in working with you on BOINC-ness. It's such an indisputably cool project and in fact it is quite tied up with the midterm goals of my "next big thing." Well, distributed computing is, anyway.

Cool, sorry for not getting back to your email. How are you getting on with BeyondBitcoin.io?

Hi. I know nothing of Gridcoin though the link you provided sounds a lot like processing power sharing that I've read about in the past. I'm currently involved in a project to take Steemit outside of the platform to try and help it become mainstream. Could you explain the association between Steemit and Girdcoin to me? specifically, is the association between Steemit and Gridcoin something positive that could be used to demonstrate Steemit's worth to society?

The association between Steemit and Gridcoin is that Steemit provides our community a platform to discuss our technology and developments without fear of constant censorship.

Due to Gridcoin's team requirement, we often get banned on other BOINC forums/websites for discussing gridcoin. I've been banned from multiple subreddits and even encountered extreme censorship on /r/BOINC.

I'm optimistic about the future of Steemit and am constantly encouraging the Gridcoin community to use it over centralized alternative platforms.

Any institution/project/company can benefit from association with Steemit. For example, through this article, I was able to raise 60 dollars, later donated to GPUGRID and Rosetta@home - two research projects based on volunteer computing and devoted to the advancement of biomedicine. Both GPUGRID and Rosetta@home are whitelisted by Gridcoin, so by supporting them, we are not only supporting beneficial medical research, but the whole idea of crypto-mining for science.
