1821: Greek Revolutionaries defeat the Turks in the Battle of Lala. Among the Greek fighters is Andreas Metaxas, future Prime Minister of Greece.

1968: Construction work begins on the Athens Tower. It is the city’s first skyscraper and its tallest.

1996: A Turkish newspaper reports that Ankara questions the Hellenic character of the Aegean islands of Farmakonisi, Agathonisi, and Kalolimnos.
