GRE Vocab: Most Common GRE Words (Part-1)

We--especially non-native students--all know learning new words from a wordlist can be super exhausting. Pursuing an MS or PhD in the US requires a GRE/GMAT score as part of the application process. GRE or GMAT has a verbal section constituted of questions with a view to evaluating your English knowledge for which a good command over vocabulary is essential. Keeping that in mind, here is a comprehensive approach for visual learners to learn vocabs in context provided by a video clip.

Ambivalent (adjective):

mixed or conflicting emotions about something
Say, you got a good job in a different city and you are not sure if you are gonna move there as in that case you will have to stay away from your family which of course you don't want but you don't want to lose the opportunity either—you are feeling ambivalent.

Betray (verb):

to reveal or make known something, usually unintentionally
We all know the usual definition of betray: to break a promise; to be disloyal to someone who trusts you. According to the secondary meaning, betray means to disclose something unwillingly. During your first presentation, sweating and trembling might betray your nervousness.

Construe (verb):

interpret (a word or action) in a particular way
Slapping your friend on the face to kill a venomous insect sitting on his cheek, might be construed wrongly by him before you explain the real reason 😜

Derivative(adjective):

(of a creative product, e.g. music, writing, etc.) not original but drawing on the work of another person
If you complete your assignment by copying from your friend's, your piece is derivative. When an artist adopts the style of another artist, he/she is going to produce derivative works.

Epiphany (noun):

a moment of sudden and great revelation or realization
If you drop out when you have only one semester left because you suddenly felt that you were born to be an entrepreneur and create a million dollar business, that sudden feeling you have had was an epiphany.
