Fishing with the Grandchildren

It was a day in which the grandchildren were to stay at our house for the day. It is not easy to entertain an eleven year old and a thirteen year old especially when one is a boy and the other girl. The both have their ideas of what activities we should be engaged in.

But I had plans that I knew they both would enjoy. I was to take them fishing. Both of them love to fish. I loaded the car with three fishing poles and tackle. So when they got to my house I loaded them up into the car and headed for the eight acre lake. On the way we stopped at the bait shop and I bought two dozen minnows. They were excited and talked about the fish they were going to catch that day.

We got to the lake and each of us got our poles and started fishing. Of course they were fishing before I could start as they had the two poles that were ready to go and mine had to be put together. So we were all now fishing and we were catching small crappie and putting them back into the lake.

The fishing was slow so my granddaughter lost interest and started to watch schools of small fish swimming around the dock. But my grandson who always finds a way to catch fish was showing us up by out catching us.
I was still catching a few fish myself and I told my granddaughter to bring her pole and I would show her how to catch some fish.

I had her place the bait next to the dock and allow it to drift out from the dock. She tried it and begin to catch fish again. But again as they stopped biting she lost interest in fishing and went to watching the school of small fish.

In the mean time my grandson had gotten his line all tangled up and I had to help him untangle his line. What a mess it was! We did get it untangled which took about 15 minutes. While we were about finished my granddaughter started fishing again in the place and manner I showed her earlier. All the sudden she yelled, “Grandpa hurry I need your help!” As I got closer I could tell she had a good size fish hooked. When she pulled it out it was a very large Crappie.

The crappie was almost 14 inches long and two pounds. It turned out to be a great day fishing with the grandchildren.
