WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS LOOKING AT ME?
SMART PHONES DUMB PEOPLE
I walked into my local independent mobile shop to replace my usual £10.00 phone that I had just lost. The guy behind the counter tried to sell me the newer model of the £10.00 phone for £12.50. I objected to the price and mentioned I was a Graffiti artist and I could refresh his shop front that had previously had a few spray painted logos on there.
"Your a Graffiti artist!?.....£10, now come outside and have a look with me"
I gave him a rough price and walked off with my new phone laughing to myself about how random the incident was.
I went back the following week to start the mural on a sunday morning. I had the idea of turning the whole shop into a giant smart phone that you walked into. With out much deliberation I got to work painting. The shop owner turned up at the end of the day saying he liked it more before.
I changed the screen to say this and rode off into the Sunset.
Below is the image of the shop before I got my hands on it.
I left the mural with the phrase "Why are you always looking at me?" up for a month while the shop owner went away on holiday. This was confusing for people as the anti smart phone writing was on a mobile phone shop! It made people laugh, but also question their relationship with there smart phone and how much time they spend staring into it.
I chose to go back and change the Mural, incorporating some of the old characters that were on the original and in the end he was very happy with the piece. It is now featured on the local Stokes Croft street art tour.
I have remained good friends with the shop keeper and wouldn't dream of buying my £10.00 phone anywhere else. Thanks for reading.
