So how can I prepare myself so that I can get a job as soon as I graduate?

in #graduate7 years ago (edited)

Well the best way to do this…

Is by preparing yourself as much as possible with the right skills…

With the right experiences and knowledge for the job you will be targeting post graduation. It is important that you benchmark yourself against the job you want as there may well be some prerequisites that mean you do not meet the criteria. For instance some tech companies require 3 plus years experience in programming language, again you may not meet this criteria.

Therefore, it is important that you do some thinking and evaluation before applying.

Meet the companies

Attend graduate open days.

Try to attend as many of these as possible.

Attending these type of events will give you the opportunity to meet companies, network and learn more about the type of candidates they are looking for.

What better way to learn about the company you hope to work for than meeting its employees and having a conversation with them. You may find out about some special programmes the company has and learn about the best way to target yourself.

Audit your skills

This is a must.

As without understanding where your strengths and weaknesses lay.

You will not be able to truly improve. I found this especially helpful as it allowed me to identify areas that I was weak in and/or need to improve as well as where my strengths stood.

Always try to build on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses. This way you will always be better.

Get your CV up to scratch

Finally, it goes without saying.

You will need to have a good CV to get a look in.

Therefore you need to ensure you advertise yourself well, as in most cases this will be your first point of contact with recruiters. Ensure that your CV contains relevant information about the role in question and is error free. This means you need to tailor your CV to the job in question.

Constantly think am I presenting the things the recruiter is after.

Would I give this person a call for an interview after reading their CV?

You want this to always be “yes”, therefore it is important that you do not send generic copies out to recruiter as this will likely work against you. The rule of thumb here is quality over quantity, always invest time in making a good application over something that is rushed and half assed as it gives you less of a chance to succeed.

I hope this helps, I wish you all the best.
