Cleaner Lagos?
Several years back,Lagos experienced an infrastructural reform and Lagosians began to notice that some acts that used to seem impossible became possible..
Lagosians would wait on the queue for a bus and no one would jump the queue? Wow!
Lagosians would use the bridge instead of crossing the roads? Wow!
Lagosians would intentionally not litter the streets and would dispose waste properly? Wow!
Lagosians would sleep peacefully in their homes without the fear of being barged in upon by armed robbers, even when it's not late in the night? Wow!
Even after a new leader was sworn into government,Lagos became better
Policemen were more equipped towards fighting crimes
Our roads became better,etc
Recently though,a new scheme was launched.A scheme to make Lagos cleaner...
Few things I noticed are:
Their are new faces on the streets, compared to the ones that did the cleaning before;those that were obviously competent at their job
Brooms have been swapped for something that looks like a set of chopsticks.
On the island last week,I noticed one of these new faces, struggling to pick up a crushed pet bottle with this "chopstick" and after several trials, she resolved to picking it with her hands.
Ok...if the chopstick would manage to pick solid wastes, what happens to the sand that the old faces used to pile up in sacks,so our community would look and feel cleaner?
I seem to see more piled up dirts everywhere around our city these days and I'm wondering -wouldn't this new concept kill the heritage of a truly clean Lagos we have enjoyed in the past number of years?
Just thinking...
