When I mentioned magnesium to a friend of mine that owns a few race horses he said, “They use magnesium on horses.” So why has my doctor never suggested it?
The UK recommended intake for magnesium (the daily amount deemed adequate to prevent deficiencies in 97.5% of the UK population) is set at 300mgs for men and 270mgs for women. This is clearly inadequate as is demonstrated below.
Here is a list of some of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency that might seriously surprise you: Magnesium helps the adrenal glands cope with stress and magnesium therefore reduces anxiety and panic attacks, it allows muscles to relax, it reduces asthma attacks, reduces blood clots and helps keep the blood thin, it allows the bowel to function correctly, at least when you are drinking enough water, magnesium eliminates spasms. You may not know that cystitis is a spasm of the bladder and treatable with magnesium. Hiccups are spasms and a sign of magnesium deficiency.

Insulin is enhanced by magnesium and in fact you can’t transfer glucose into cells without magnesium. Magnesium deficiency can lead to fatigue. Did you know that blood vessels can go into spasm and this can cause cholesterol to rise and blood pressure to rise. Melatonin which regulates sleep can’t work properly without magnesium. Deficiency can lead to kidney problems.

Magnesium regulates over 300 enzymes in our bodies and makes ATP, the very stuff that powers the energy system of cells, the mitochondria. Even DNA synthesis depends on magnesium. It is highly probable that at least 50% of heart attacks are due to a magnesium deficiency and angina is similarly due to a magnesium deficiency.

Doctors would tell us that bone loss and tooth decay require more calcium but the reality is that a magnesium deficiency and therefore supplementation with magnesium is the answer. In Raynaud’s the blood vessels can cause pain and numbness. Pain and numbness can be overcome using magnesium. Women with premenstrual cramping pain can easily find a remedy with magnesium, also gynecological problems like pre-eclampsia are regularly treated with magnesium in hospitals avoiding infant death.

Without magnesium there is a risk in childbirth of cerebral palsy, certainly not be taken lightly. Magnesium can solve problems such as tinnitis, vertigo and problems of the nervous system. Fibromyalgia means multiple muscle pains. Muscle pains can be alleviated with magnesium as can twitches around the eyes, as can chronic neck and back pain and many other ailments.
