Glutathione is a type of antioxidant molecule which is a naturally occurring cell in the human body. It is an important component of our nervous and digestive system, and it is comprised of mainly three types of amino acids-:

  • Glutamine is an abundantly found amino acid in the body, whose main task is to facilitate the functioning of cells in the stomach and intestines.
  • Glycine- It is another naturally occurring amino acid in the body that is used as a building block for the protein cells in the body.
  • Cysteine is an amino acid that is useful in making proteins in the body and supports the general metabolic functions of the intestine and stomach.

To understand what is glutathione and why is it needed in our body, let’s see some Glutathione benefits-:

  • Helps with an increase in unstable molecules- The Free radicals are unstable molecules whose occurrence in the human body are facilitated by unhealthy eating habits and a polluted environment. These can lead to severe cell damage in the body due to oxidation. The main diseases which the Free radicals can lead to are- Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and many more, which are usually caused due to inflammation. To tackle this issue, the presence of glutathione in foods that we consume daily is very important.
  • Prevents Alcoholic liver diseases- As we know, alcoholic drinks usually damage the liver as they directly hit the liver cells, which slows down its regeneration process and can have severe long-term effects. Excessive drinking often leads to fatty liver disease, which can destroy the liver and its functioning. Cell deterioration can increase due to oxidation and glutathione, an abundantly preset antioxidant in the body that can help deoxidise the cells.
  • Known for reducing cancer generating cells- As the cells that can cause cancer are also unstable cells, they can be reduced by the antioxidants like Although it is not directly used as a cure for cancer, it can be used as a preventive measure that can help in reducing cancer-inducing cells.
  • Promotes and supports healthy skin- Rough, dull and patchy skin are all results of dead cells of the skin, and it occurs due to low cell regeneration abilities of the body. Glutathione has always been a fast cell regeneration agent that can decrease the dead skin cells in the body to a large extent.

Some of the most important benefits of Glutathione for skin-:

  • It can help reduce the after-effects of psoriasis, another severe skin disease.
  • If we intake enough Glutathione regularly, it can help increase the skin's elasticity.
  • It can help us rebuild the collagen matrix of the skin and increase its general strength.
  • It helps in the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines on the body and improves the overall texture of the skin.
  • As it is an anti-oxidant, it can largely reduce the acne and inflammation of the body and skin cells.
  • It helps to keep the skin hydrated and keeps the moisture locked in the skin cells.
  • All the positive effects that Glutathione have on a person's skin can really help them to get firm and youthful skin that has a radiant glow altogether.

Now that we know what is glutathione and how it is beneficial for almost all skin-related issues, here is a list of Glutathione foods for skin-:

  • Foods with high Vitamin C – Vitamin C is itself an antioxidant that de-oxidizes free radical cells and provides a way for Glutathione to work its wonder. So, in a way, Vitamin C-rich foods do not directly increase Glutathione in the body, but it eases its increase by fighting off the oxidative cells in the body. Foods rich in Vitamin C – citrus fruits, kiwis, bell peppers and strawberry.
  • Sulfur Rich Foods- Sulfur is an important building factor of proteins in the body. It is mostly found in poultry foods and non-veg foods like beef, fish etc. There are some Vegetarian sources of Sulfur as well, such as cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens etc.
  • Whey Protein is an expensive types of protein available, but it is one of the most effective agents for glutathione synthesis as it contains cysteine.
  • Selenium Rich Foods- This also helps in facilitating glutathione activities in the body. It can be found in beans, mushrooms, brown rice, cottage cheese etc.
