Models vs. Visuals

Most of the posts featured on the CritDay platform could either be categorised as a model or a visual. Models come in a variety of forms; 3D printed, laser cut, handmade, cast or fast sketch models. They are one of the most powerful tools we have available to us as Architects and architecture students, allowing us to share our intentions in a physical, three dimensional format. The term visuals here is used a little more broadly. Many of the visuals featured on CritDay are 3D renders, but within this category we are talking about work with a digital (or paper) output; sections, plans, details, axonometric drawings and the list goes on.

In 2017 we ran an experiment to see whether more models or visuals were posted. Using specific hashtags to differentiate models and visuals, we were able to monitor the type of posts and also activity on those posts. It turns out 2.5 times more visuals were posted than models! Now this may seem there is a preference to post visuals over models, however it is really a question of supply.

Here at CritDay we always aim to post the highest quality architectural work. The majority of the work we receive would fall into the visuals category, therefore it is probably quite obvious that more visuals are featured on the platform. With that said we would like to increase the amount of models featured.

What do you prefer?
So we now know more visuals are posted than models, but what received more attention by the CritDay audience. To determine this we have reviewed out most liked posts over the last two years.

The image below shows the top 15 posts over the last two years. Out of these 15 posts the first 12 are all visuals, it is only when you get to post number 13 that a model appears!

Where are all the models?

Summary
Keep those stunning visuals coming, but let's hope to see some beautifully crafted models being featured over the coming months.

Best of luck.
Next time, models tips.
